「2020年の英単語」は、やはり軒並みコロナ関係の言葉だった

毎年の年末年始には、英語圏の諸団体が選定する「今年の単語」を取り上げるようにしているが、2020年は、いずれも新型コロナウイルスに関係する言葉を選んでいた。予想通りで意外性がないが、かといってコロナとまったく関係ない英単語が選ばれたら、それはそれで何だか奇異に感じるだろうから、我ながら勝手なものである。

ということで、主な団体の "Word of the Year 2020" の選定結果を列挙すると、

- Covid
(American Dialect Society)

- pandemic
(Merriam-Webster および Dictionary.com)

- quarantine
(Cambridge Dictionary)

- lockdown
(Collins Dictionary)

選定方法はオンライン辞書で参照された頻度だったり合議制だったりとまちまちだが、やはり一つに絞るならコロナをおいて他にはない年だったということになるだろう。

Collins はこのほか候補になった単語として、coronavirus, key worker, self-isolate, distancing, furlough, MEGxit, TikToker をあげていた。最初の５つがコロナ関連である。

このうち furlough は「仕事の一時帰休」で、コロナで取り入れる企業が増えた。MEGxit は、イギリスのヘンリー（ハリー）王子とメーガン妃 Meghan, Duchess of Sussex の王室離脱を Brexit と同じ手法で表したものだ。

唯一異彩を放っていたのが Oxford の選定である。今回は "Words of an Unprecedented Year" として、単一の単語を取り上げることを見送ってしまった。代わりに、”言葉でふりかえるこの１年”をリポートとしてまとめ、サイトからダウンロードして頒布する形とした。

- As our Word of the Year process started and this data was opened up, it quickly became apparent that 2020 is not a year that could neatly be accommodated in one single “word of the year”, so we have decided to report more expansively on the phenomenal breadth of language change and development over the year in our Words of an Unprecedented Year report.

全世界を襲ったコロナ禍は当然だが、それ以外にも社会を揺るがす出来事があちこちで起き、まさに unprecedented な激動の一年だったのもまた確かで、オックスフォードとしてはそれも無視できない、ということだろう。

私はまだリポートは読んでいないが、この "Words of an Unprecedented Year" の選定についてのBBCの記事によれば、

- They include bushfires, Covid-19, WFH, lockdown, circuit-breaker, support bubbles, keyworkers, furlough, Black Lives Matter and moonshot.

Casper Grathwohl, the president of Oxford Dictionaries, said: "I've never witnessed a year in language like the one we've just had. The Oxford team was identifying hundreds of significant new words and usages as the year unfolded, dozens of which would have been a slam dunk for Word of the Year at any other time.

"It's both unprecedented and a little ironic - in a year that left us speechless, 2020 has been filled with new words unlike any other."

とのことである。

余談だが、やはり毎年行われている雑誌 TIME の "Person of the Year" は今回、アメリカ大統領選挙で当選した ジョー・バイデン氏と副大統領になるカマラ・ハリス氏を選んだ。

タイム誌の「今年の人」は私が記憶する限り、大統領選挙の年は必ずと言っていいほど次期大統領を選んでいる（再選の場合はその限りでないが）。その意味では、これほどさまざまな出来事が起きた一年であっても慣習には逆らえなかった、ということだろうか（「初～」づくしであるハリス氏を組み合わせてはいるが）。

私としては、今回は慣例を破ってコロナに関係のある選定になることを期待していただけに、ちょっと残念だった。「タイム」はやはりアメリカの雑誌だということになるのだろう。
