wild blue yonder 「大空のかなた」「蒼穹」 [英語文化のトリビア]
先日何回かにわたって取り上げた blue sky からの連想で、wild blue yonder を落穂拾い的に取り上げたい。「はるかに広がる青空」という感じだろうか。「蒼穹」という日本語があるが、それを思わせる表現でもある。wild の代わりに wide blue yonder としても良いようだ。
yonder はふだん見ない単語だが、over there を表す文語とのこと。辞書を見ると、yond+er で、この yond あるいは yon は基礎単語である beyond と共通する言葉だということがわかる。yonder の意味を知らずとも、「はるか向こう」というイメージを抱かせる響きがあるなと感じるのはそのためだろう。
手製の英語学習ノートを検索すると、ブッシュそしてオバマの２つの政権で続けて国防長官をつとめたロバート・ゲーツ氏の回想録で拾った実例をメモしていた。

最初にどのようにこの言葉を知ったのかは覚えていないが、歌か何かではないかと思って検索語を設定してウェブを調べても、ピンとくる曲はなかった。
その代わりというか、ヒットの上位には "US Air Force" という結果がいくつも並んでいたので、これをヒントにさらに調べると、もうひとつの疑問である、この表現の由来の答えも見つかった。

Strictly speaking, the expression is 'wild' blue yonder but it frequently appears as 'wide' blue yonder. The opening words of the song are in fact, "Off we go into the wild blue yonder."

ということで、アメリカ空軍歌に出てくる言葉なのだった。国防長官というだけでなくかつて空軍の士官でもあったゲーツ氏がこの表現を使ったのも頷けるように思う。
この空軍”公式ソング”の正式なタイトルは、その名も The U.S. Air Force というもので、Wikipedia には項目も立っていた。

そこには歌詞全体も載っているが、blue yonder というちょっと詩的な感じもする出だしの言葉とはうらはらに、その後はいかにも軍隊らしい wild で威勢のいい言葉が並んでいる。
英語圏の辞書から語義や例文を引用しよう。「はるか彼方の未知の場所へ」ということで、向かう先は大空以外にも使えることがわかる。ただなぜ wide も使われるようになったのかはわからなかった。wild の音からの単純な連想だろうか。

なお、blue と sky からの連想で、「空」ではなく「海」を使った between the devil and the deep blue sea というイディオムを思い出した。
こちらはスタンダードナンバーのタイトルで覚えたことを明確に覚えており、次回に書こうと考えたが、念のため調べたら実はこのブログを始めて間もない頃にすでに取り上げていたことがわかった。もう十数年前のことですっかり忘れていたが、せっかくなのでそのエントリを紹介させていただきたい（→ 「絶体絶命」の本当の由来は何か）。
余談だが、上記の回顧録でゲーツ氏は、オバマ政権で同僚になったバイデン副大統領（当時）のことをけちょんけちょんに書いていたのを覚えている。対照的に国務長官のヒラリー・クリントン氏については高く評価していて、すぐに意気投合したという。
