academic 「現実的でない」「空論の」

先日取り上げた blue-sky 「実際的でない」からの連想で academic について短く書いておきたい。この単語には「学問の」だけでなく、「非実際的な」「実用的でない」という意味がある。日本語の「象牙の塔」が、時に「現実離れした」という場合に使われることがあるのと似ている。

手製の英語学習ノートを検索したが、この意味での実例はメモしていなかったので、英語圏の辞書から定義や用例を引用しよう。

- So scholarly as to be unaware of the outside world; lacking in worldliness.

- Having little practical use or value, as by being overly detailed, unengaging, or theoretical: dismissed
the article as a dry, academic exercise.

ちなみに Online Etymology Dictionary によると

- Meaning "theoretical, not practical, not leading to a decision" (such as university debates or classroom legal exercises) is from 1886.

ということなので、academic がこの意味で使われるようになったのはそれほど古いことではないようだ。

辞書で定義や訳語を読むと「そうか」と思うが、実際に使われた例に接して、「学問の」ではなくこちらの意味だ、ととっさに把握できるかだろうか。困難な場合もあるように思う。内容や文脈をちゃんと理解していることが重要だろう。

なお冒頭に「象牙の塔」と書いたが、これはどう考えても昔から日本語にある表現ではあるまいと思って辞書を引くとその通りで、１９世紀前半にフランスの文学者 C. A. Sainte-Beuve という人が使った tour d'ivoire に由来するとのことだ。

英語圏の辞書で ivory tower を引くと disapproving としているものがかなりあり、ネガティブな意味で使われることがままあることがうかがえる。

余談だが d'ivoire はアフリカの国コートジボワールの名前に出てくるが、英語圏ではこの国名を Ivory Coast という人の方が多いのではないかと想像する。

日本では以前から「コートジボワール」が普通に使われていて、学校で使う地図やメディアでもそうなっていたが、外務省などではけっこう近年まで「象牙海岸共和国」と表記していた。官僚も academic な面があるようだ。
