poster boy「イメージキャラクター」 [読書と英語]
以前読んだビリー・ジョエルの伝記本で拾った表現の紹介を続ける。poster boy は、ポスターに載せて人目をひきつける存在ということだろうか、何かの運動や大義を象徴するシンボル的な人物を指す。
難病などに苦しんでいる人が支援の呼びかけ活動に登場するのがひとつの例といえるが、何かのシンボルということで、「代表」「顔」さらに「典型」「見本」といった、さらに広い意味でも使われる。
ビリー・ジョエルの本では、彼がアルコール依存症になったことについて語るくだりに出てきた。ちょっと長いが引用しよう。boy であっても子供に限らず使えることがわかる。
- “The truth is, I don’t know much about sobriety. I know a hell of a lot about drinking. And there’s no point in my talking about that, because everybody has his or her own experience. So I’m not going to be the poster boy for AA. I don’t really follow the program. Yet I’m not going to diss it, either, because it works for a lot of people. As I see it, I had my time, I came through it, and that’s that.”

ここに出てくる AA とは Alcoholics Anonymous あるいは Al-Anon と呼ばれる団体のことで、これは以前取り上げたことがある（→こちら）。ビリー本人はその活動の「広告塔」になるつもりはなかった、と訳すのはちょっと行きすぎだろうか。
次は、英語圏の辞書にある定義と例文である。
- North American A man who epitomizes or represents a specified quality, cause, etc.
Almost overnight, the 26-year-old became the poster boy for American independent film.
He seemed like a poster boy for youth, good looks, and vitality.

boy ならば girl はどうだろう、さらに child はどうだろうか、と思うが、その通りで、そうした形でも使われる。

ちょっと面白いと思ったのは、Collins English Dictionary にある poster boy の記述だった。
- in British English
or poster girl
1. a person who appears on a poster
2. a person who typifies or represents a particular characteristic, cause, opinion, etc
a poster girl for late motherhood
US equivalent: poster child
つまり poster boy/girl は英国英語であり、米国英語では poster child になる、と書いている。
しかし同じく英国の辞書である Oxford Dictionary of English は、先に引用したように poster boy を米国英語としている。そして最初に掲げたビリー・ジョエルも、もちろんアメリカ人である。
ということで、「コリンズ」が書いているような英米での使い分けが実際にされているのか、という疑問も感じた。辞書もひとつだけに頼るのでなく、複数の説明を見比べたり、いろいろな実例に触れたり、ということが大切なのだろう。外国語学習はやっぱり大変である。
