ネイティブをも困らせる beg the question という表現

前回の incognito にあげた実例に beg the question という表現が出てきた。beg は「請う、頼む」ということなので、「質問を投げかける」というような意味だろう、と考える人が多いのではないかと思う。

実はこの表現、ちょっと注意が必要である。

前回の英文をあらためて引用しよう。

- The fact that Superman can hide behind a pair of glasses and not be noticed is one of the goofier parts of the comic lore, but Man of Steel star Henry Cavill is out to prove the subtle disguise really does work.

Of course, as you've likely guessed, all those busy New Yorkers just ignored him and kept rolling by. Though this really begs the question — is it that easy to go incognito, or is Cavill just that unrecognizable to the general public?

辞書で beg the question をひくと、次のように書かれている。

- 1 （証明されていない）論点を最初から真実と決めてかかる
2 困難（問題点など）を避ける

- 1 （論点となっていることを）真と仮定して論を進める（「論点先取りの誤り」となる）
2 論点をぼかす、難点をごまかす
（ジーニアス英和大辞典）

しかし上記の実例は、この表現のあとに A or B の形で問いが出てくるし、また文脈・内容からも、上記の定義はそぐわない感じがする。

さらに辞書を見ると、次のような説明をしているものが見つかった。

- 1 論点を巧みに避ける、困難を回避する
2 論点を自明のものとして論を進める
3 （誤用）問題を提起する

そう、この実例は「誤用」の方に当てはまると思えるのだ。冒頭で書いたような、字面から想像できる意味だと考えて問題はないということになるのではないか。

そしてインターネットで調べると、この表現について書かれた英文が辞書を含めて相当数見つかったが、そうした記述から、この「誤用」が広く使われている現実がうかがえる。

この表現、もともとはアリストテレスが唱えた論理学に源流があるそうで、だから本来の意味は字面からは想像しがたいものになっているのだろう。そのへんは私にも難しいので、もう少し一般的な説明を引用しよう。

- Take for granted or assume the truth of the very thing being questioned. For example, Shopping now for a dress to wear to the ceremony is really begging the question—she hasn't been invited yet. This phrase, whose roots are in Aristotle's writings on logic, came into English in the late 1500s. In the 1990s, however, people sometimes used the phrase as a synonym of “ask the question” (as in The article begs the question: “What are we afraid of?”).

- This is one of those rare phrases in which the meaning is more debated than the origin.

後者にあるように、英語のネイティブスピーカーでもまごつく表現であるらしい。現代の英語話者の感覚では、beg を素直（？）な意味に取るほうが自然に思えるということなのだろうと想像する。

「情けは人のためならず」や「（流れに）棹さす」などの日本語は、本来とはほとんど逆の意味で使われるようになってきている。「誤用」が広まると、本来の意味の方が誤りと取られることすらありうる。beg the question の意味の変化も、似たようなものだろうと想像する。

理屈にあわないと考えたり、「本来の意味を知らないのか」と他人に言ったりするのはたやすいが、言葉を使うのは生きた人間であることを考えれば、むしろ変化があるほうが自然だといえるのかもしれない。
