diminutive 「愛称」（ビリー・ジョエル「ピアノ・マン」） [音楽と英語]
以前読んだビリー・ジョエルの伝記で拾った言葉をもうひとつ紹介しよう。diminutive は言語の専門家でない私には無縁に見える単語だが、この本で知って「なるほど」と思ったので、取り上げてみたい。
デビュー後、鳴かず飛ばずだったビリー・ジョエルが初めて注目を集めるきっかけとなった曲「ピアノ・マン」 Piano Man について書いたくだりに出てくる。
斜字体にした最初の２行はこの曲の歌詞の一部で、続く our narrator とは歌詞の語り手を指す。
なおビリー・ジョエルは、売れない時にロサンゼルスのバーで Bill Martin という芸名でピアノ弾きをしていた。また彼の本名は William Martin Joel である。

Our narrator has a name, but whether that makes the song more or less personal is open to question.
