fix-it man 「調整役」「お助けマン」 [読書と英語]
このところ多忙のため日々のニュースなどの活きのいい英文を追えず、更新も滞っている。こうした時によくやっている窮余の策として、これまで読んだ本で目にした言葉を紹介したい。今回取り上げるのは fix-it man である。
少し前に読んだ、"Bad Blood: Secrets and Lies in a Silicon Valley Startup" から引用する。「第２のスティーブ・ジョブズ」と華々しく持ち上げられながら、実はとんでもないペテン師だった起業家について、その実態を告発したジャーナリストが書いたノンフィクションだ。
- Ed was a quiet engineer who had gained a reputation in the Valley as a fix-it man. Tech startups stymied by a complex engineering problem called him and, more often than not, he found a solution.

私が英語学習ノートにメモしていた別の実例をもうひとつ引用する。イラク戦争をめぐるブッシュ政権の内幕について書いたボブ・ウッドワードの著作からで、この本からはこれまでも表現をいくつか紹介してきた。
- As Rice's deputy, Hadley had been the fix-it man, the one to call Armitage or Wolfowitz or someone at the CIA to solve an immediate problem. Not the president told Hadley that he could no longer be Mr. Fix-It.

ここに出てくる Mr. Fix-It という言い方は、他の本で拾った実例も私のノートにメモしていた。

意味は文脈からも何となく想像できるが、辞書を引くと fix-it として、「修理の、修理をする」「（事を）調停（調整、改善）する」（形容詞）、「修理業」「工作（根回し）をする人」「何でも屋、便利屋」（名詞）と書かれている。
英語圏の辞書からも fix-it の定義と例文を引用しよう。

最初の実例をあげた Bad Blood は、まるでミステリ小説のように読めるノンフィクションで、原書ではしんどいという人には、翻訳もされているので、ぜひおすすめしたい作品だ。
前半は、カリスマ起業家エリザベス・ホームズが医療診断機器のベンチャー企業「セラノス」を起こすサクセス・ストーリーとその裏で進められていた詐欺的行為を描き、後半では一転して、情報を得た著者が、良心を持つ企業内部の人たちの協力を少しづつ取りつけ、度重なる妨害や嫌がらせを受けながらもその実態に粘り強く迫っていく様子が活写される。
著者の報道のあと起訴されたホームズは、新型コロナウイルス禍と本人の妊娠のため裁判が２度にわたって延期されているという。（悪）運が強い人はどこまでもツイているものだと思ってしまう。
