sleeper hit「時間がたってからヒットした作品」

前回はタイトルでアイキャッチとして「大ブレーク」という言葉を使ってみたが、連想で sleeper hit を取り上げたい。手持ちの英和辞典には載っていない表現だ。

意味的には特に前回とは関係はない。映画やドラマ、音楽などについて、「発表当初は成功しなかったが、のちに人気を集めるようになったヒット作」を指して使われる。

映画などの娯楽を楽しんでいる人には、多かれ少なかれ、愛好する”ニッチ”な分野や作品があるのではないだろうか。私の場合、そんな作品での sleeper hit としてすぐに思いつくのは、このブログでも何度か取り上げた「ブレードランナー」 Blade Runner である。

大物ハリソン・フォードの主演ながら、本国アメリカでも1982年の公開時はまったくヒットしなかったが、口コミなどでじわじわと注目を集めるようになり、今では「SF映画の金字塔」と評価されるほどになった。文字通り眠りから覚めたかのようで、初期からのファンである私は大いにうれしかった。

ということで、この作品が出てくる実例をひとつ。「ブレードランナー」の続編について、ハリソン・フォードがリドリー・スコット監督から出演の打診を受けたことを報じる記事である。

- Harrison Ford has revealed he has been in talks with director Ridley Scott to appear in a sequel to cult movie Blade Runner.
The original movie was a sleeper hit which had a lukewarm reception when it came out in 1982 but went on to gain popularity, and has had an enduring appeal for movie fans.

この数年後の2017年に、続編は別の監督により Blade Runner 2049 として結実した（が、こちらは残念ながら、時代を先取りしていたカルト的な第一作にはまったく及ばないと思う）。

もうひとつ sleeper hit といえば、これまた何度かここで取り上げたことがあるTVドラマ「スター・トレック」もそのひとつといえるだろう。創案者であるプロデューサー、故ジーン・ロッデンベリーについての記事から。

- When it was finally canceled after the third season, no one could have guessed that it would yield 40 years of sequels and spin-offs. “Star Trek was a sleeper hit,” says Arnold. “No one knew how big it was until it was canceled.”

最後に英語での説明を引用しよう。ふたつ目は sleeper の語義にあったもので、この１語だけでも同じ意味になり、また用例のように hit 以外の語とも組み合わせて使えることになる。

- In the entertainment industry, a sleeper hit is a film, television series, music release, video game, or some other entertainment product that is initially unsuccessful on release but becomes a success later on. A sleeper hit may have little promotion or lack a successful launch, but then garner a fan following that rewards it media attention, which in turn increases its public exposure and public interest in the product.

This film - and this DVD release - therefore is a sleeper waiting to be discovered.
Just as the initial comic book issue became a sleeper success, so too has the silver screen Spider-Man.

Any movie with those much marketing dollars is going to attract more viewers than a little tiny movie that might be hoping for a great sleeper hit thanks to a couple good reviews.
