on his say-so 「そうしろと言われたので...」 [単語・表現]
前回と同様、手製の英語学習ノートを見返していて「命令」「指図」の類例として目にとまったのが on somebody's say-so である。これも前回のように、単語そのままで意味が浮かんできそうな表現だ。
ノートにメモしていたのは、
- You didn't do it just on his say-so?
「まさか彼にそうしろと言われただけでそうしたんじゃないでしょうね」という短文だったが、これだけではあっけないので、英語圏の辞書から説明と例文を引用しよう。
- on someone's authority; with someone's permission.
I can't do it on your say-so. I'll have to get a written request.
Bill: I canceled the contract with the A.B.C. Company. Bob: On whose say-so?

- According to one's authority, as in I'm reorganizing the files on the boss's say-so, or You can skip the exam? On whose say-so?
The noun say-so, dating from about 1630, originally meant simply "saying something," that is, an assertion (without authority or proof). By the early 1800s it had acquired its present meaning.

ふたつ目の American Heritage 辞典にあるように、say-so は「（ある人が）根拠もなく勝手に言っていること」「独断」を意味し、そこから「権限」「許可」として使われるようになった、ということらしい。
say-so 単体で辞書を引くと、
- pl. say-sos Informal
1. An unsupported statement or assurance:
I'm not reporting him just on your say-so.
2. An expression of permission or approval:
If you want to borrow the bike, you have to get her say-so.
3. The right or authority to decide:
Do I have any say-so in this matter?

まとまった作品で見つけた実例で学習ノートにメモしていたのは without someone's say-so という形だった。アーサー・ヘイリーの小説 The Evening News で拾ったもので、十数年前にこのブログを始めて間もないころ何度か表現を取り上げた作品だ（→例えばこちら）。
- You'll follow the orders you have. Do nothing else without my say-so.

もうひとつ、go along with someone's say-so としての例が、００７ものの「黄金銃を持つ男」の原作小説からメモしていた。
- They'll go along with our say-so.
(The Man with the Golden Gun by Ian Fleming)
それにしては so という単語は、日本語と同じような発音と意味を持つのが、偶然とはいえおもしろい。
I told you so. という決り文句を聞くと、どこまでも日本人である私には、「そう言ったじゃないか（だから言わんこっちゃない）」という日本語も聞こえてくるような気持ちになるが、今回の say-so も、ちょっとそれと似たような言葉といえそうだ。
