What you see is what you get. 「見ての通り」「ありのまま」

前回の "It's O.K. to not be O.K." に続いて、大坂なおみ選手が TIME 誌の最近号に寄稿した英文から表現を取り上げよう。"What you see is what you get." は、「見たまんまで、何も隠していない」「ご覧の通りで、ごまかしはない」ということを表す表現だ。

マスメディアとの関係について触れた部分に出てくる。

- I always try to answer genuinely and from the heart. I’ve never been media-trained, so what you see is what you get. The way I see it, the reliance and respect from athlete to press is reciprocal.

However, in my opinion (and I want to say that this is just my opinion and not that of every tennis player on tour), the press-conference format itself is out of date and in great need of a refresh.

ここで大坂なおみ選手は、「マスコミ慣れしていない自分は、何の飾り事もしておらず、皆さんがメディアなどで見る通りの人間なのだ」というような事を言っているのだろう。

私はこの表現を略語の WYSIWYG として最初に覚えた。何がきっかけだったか記憶になく、ITに詳しいわけでもないが、「コンピューターのディスプレイに表示される内容がその通りに出力（印刷）される」という意味だ。

その後、人間について「裏表のない」とか、販売される商品が「展示してあるものと違いはない」ということを指す場合にも使われることを知った。
