at the end of the day 「結局のところ」（米の体操女王バイルズ選手、五輪を棄権）

オリンピックについて、マスコミが自国の選手を中心に伝えるのは当然のことだろうが、英語圏のウェブサイトを先日見て、あらためてそう思った。その時のCNNが（またBBCも）トップページで大きく報じていたのが、「東京五輪でアメリカの有力体操選手がまさかの棄権！」というニュースだった。

日本でもご存知の方は知っているニュースなのだろうが、少なくとも現時点では国内のマスコミでも大々的に扱われたとまではいえないだろう。

そんな風に「アメリカのスーパースター選手をめぐる純粋なスポーツ記事か」と思って読んでみると、実は社会性もある内容だということを知った。

前回のリオ五輪で複数の金メダルを獲得した体操女子の”女王”である Simone Biles 選手が、団体総合の決勝で「精神面の理由」で途中棄権したというものだ。

「自国の選手だから扱いが大きい」と最初に感じたのは、私の単純な思い込みだったというべきか。

そのバイルズ選手が棄権について出したコメントから、at the end of the day という表現を取り上げたい。基本中の基本の単語ばかり並んでいるが、これでまとまった表現で、「結局は」とか「つまるところ」という意味になる。

オーストラリアのABCニュースが発言をまとまった形で引用していたので、最初に目にとまったCNNではなく、そちらから引用しよう。

- American gymnast Simone Biles says mental health concerns forced her to pull out of the team gymnastics finals at the Tokyo Olympics.

Biles elaborated on those comments when facing the media in Tokyo, saying the pressure of expectation had weighed on her, as well as her own doubts about her form.

ウェブ記事を読んだあと、国内で手に入る「ニューヨーク・タイムズ」 International Edition の紙版のバックナンバーをいくつか眺めていたら、つい先日の号に Biles 選手についての特集記事が１面に載っていたのに気づいた。

棄権する前に出た記事なのでタイミングは偶然なのだが、この中で引用されているバイルス選手本人の言葉にもこの表現が出てきた。

彼女のお気に入り、というか口ぐせなのだろうか。それにしてもこの発言、いま読むと棄権も不思議でないような意味深というか内省的な内容である。

- She added: "At the end of the day, I'm such a huge athlete, but am I? If you take off that mask, you know, who will I be? I'm still trying to find out."

at the end of the day はイディオム集などでもよく取り上げられているのではと想像するので、「そんなの知ってらあ」という人も多いかと思うが、一方で、以前どこかで「一日の終わりに」と訳してあるのを見たこともあるので、今回取り上げることにしたしだいである。

文字通りの意味でも使えるはずなのでやっかいかもしれないが、上記に掲げたバイルズ選手の発言は、いずれも「一日の終わり」だとヘンなのは明らかだろう。

上記「マグロウヒル」にあるように、字面が似ている by the end of the day という言い方があるが、こちらは文字通りの「一日が終わるまでには」という意味しかないはずだ。

さてスポーツ選手のメンタルヘルスといえば、このブログでも何度か取り上げたことがある大坂なおみ選手も連想するが、こうした発言が相次ぐと、私には超人にしか見えないトップアスリートたちも They are people at the end of the day. なのだなと思う。

こうした言動には賛否もあるようだが、これまであまり表立って取りあげられなかった課題についての問題提起になったことは確かだろう。
