make a federal case out of 「大げさに騒ぎ立てる」

イディオム集などでちょっと変わった表現に出会っても、自分の中ではなかなか定着せず（語学センスのいい人はすぐに覚えてしまうのだろうが）、実例を目にして「なるほど本当に使われているんだ」と妙に感心したりする。make a federal case out of は私にとってそんな言い回しである。

かつて何かで出会ったことがある、というレベルに留まっていて、個々の単語は簡単なのに自分からすっと使える表現ではない。英語のつきあいの幅が不十分なのだろう、実例にもなかなかお目にかからなかった。

しかし先日、アメリカの作家アイザック・アシモフの連作推理短編集「黒後家蜘蛛の会」の原著 Tales of the Black Widowers の一編を読んでいたら、この表現が目に飛び込んできた。

Alex という人物が妻とケンカをした末に家を飛び出した後、妻が殺害されているのが見つかった。夫婦ゲンカなど当時の状況について説明が行われている場面である。

- ...But Alex would always try to defend himself and then things would just get worse. That time, most of the night was filled with argument.... Of course, he says now that if he only hadn't made a federal case out if it, he wouldn't have left, and then none of it would have happened.

「～について必要以上に大騒ぎする」「大げさに騒ぎ立てる」ことを表す。federal 「連邦（制度）の」に case がつくと、どうしてこうした意味になるのか、federal に何か変わった意味があるのかと思ったが、そうでもなさそうだ。

ネットを見ても明白な説明が見当たらなかったが、地域社会のささいなもめごとを連邦レベルの裁判所に持ち込む、ということから来ているのだろうと想像する。日本だと「お上のやっかいになる」ということがあるが、似て非なるようなのがおもしろい。

英語圏の辞書から引用しよう。

- To exaggerate or build up the importance of something; to make a big deal out of something. The phrase is often used to complain that someone is exaggerating a problem or alleged wrongdoing.
So I ate your leftovers. Geez, don't make a federal case out of it!
I'm not trying to make a federal case out of it, but I know you stole my new sweater!

アシモフの「黒後家蜘蛛の会」シリーズ（全６巻）は、私が若いころに読んで大変気に入ったミステリ短編集だ。大傑作とか本格ミステリというのではないが、気軽に読んで楽しめる作品で、ときおり読み返したくなる。

数年前に翻訳で再読した際にこのブログでも何度か触れたことがあり、原書はほとんどが手に入らなくなっているが、その後、海外の古書店も利用して絶版になっている巻を揃え、ときおり拾い読みして楽しんでいる。
