fall from grace 「失墜」「失脚」（クオモ州知事が辞任へ） [ニュースと英語]
ニューヨークのクオモ州知事がセクハラ問題で辞任するとのニュースに接した時、私の頭の中にとっさに浮かんだ言葉が fall from grace だった。
のちにCNNの関連記事を見たら、この表現が冒頭に出てきた。偶然ではあるが、英語圏のメディアも使っていたのにちょっと嬉しい気にもなったので、取り上げてみたい。
そのCNNの記事である。
- New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo's fall from grace -- unthinkable a year ago -- serves as a warning for other governors caught in a once-in-a-lifetime pandemic: The crisis has offered a chance to build their national profiles, but it has also magnified their own flaws and appetites for risk.

grace は「気品」「優雅」「好意」「恩恵」といった意味があるが、この表現ではもともとは「神の恩寵」のことだそうで、そこから”墜ちる”ということで、「堕落する」「信用を失う」「不興を買う」「失脚する」ことを指す。名詞および動詞として使われる。
飛ぶ鳥を落とす勢いだった人が、スキャンダルなどが原因で地に墜ちてしまった場合などにぴったりの表現といえそうだ。
次の実例は、日産のゴーン氏が国外に逃亡したことについての「ニューヨーク・タイムズ」紙のオピニオン記事で拾って学習ノートのメモしていたものである。
- Mr. Ghosn had rivals inside Nissan who might well have wanted to bring him down. But there are reasons to doubt Mr. Ghosn’s contention that Japanese xenophobia was the main reason for his fall from grace. There may be a more plausible explanation.

本人は今も否定しているようだが、司法当局からセクハラを認定されバイデン大統領も辞任を求めていた。他国の話とはいえ１年前を考えると「まさか」という感じで、まさに「失墜」との印象がある。
