grate my teeth 「歯ぎしりする」 [単語・表現]
前回の screech と似て「きいきいぎしぎしと不快な音を立てる」ことを表す単語に grate がある。チーズを細かくすりおろす”おろし金”を「グレーター」というが、「こすりつける」「すりつぶす」動作を音にからめて、「きしる」ことを表す意味になったのではないかと想像する。
そして grate one's teeth とすると「歯ぎしりする」ということになる。比喩的に、人の感情を害したり怒らせたりする場合にも使える。日本語の「歯ぎしりする」も比喩的に使われるのがおもしろいが、もしかしたら外国語から影響を受けたものだろうか。
ネットで見つけた下記の実例には、前回の screech にも出てきた「黒板に爪を立てる」ことも折り込まれている。

なお動詞は grate のほか、grind や gnash （g は無音）も使える。grit とすると、「歯を食いしばる」「歯を食いしばって耐える」という意味合いになる。文字通りの「歯ぎしり」は teeth grinding だが、医学用語では bruxism というそうだ。
何かが「～を不快にさせる」「～の気に障る」という場合は grate on という形で使える。on のあとは人のほか、one's nerves （「神経に障る、怒らせる」）、one's ear （「耳障り） などが置かれる。
私の学習ノートには、００７ことジェームズ・ボンドものの一作「ゴールドフィンガー」の原作小説で目にとまった下記の実例がメモしてあった。ここでは mouth が使われている。
内容から、on のない grate one's mouth と同じ意味で使われているはずだ。しかしネットで on ありで検索して見つかる例は、砂粒などが口に入って歯をガリガリいわせる不快な状態を表すものばかりだった。そこでこの実例をどう考えたらいいのか、非ネイティブの私には判断はつかないが、一応載せておこう。
