poetic license 「詩的許容」とは何のことか

前回の poetic justice からの連想で、poetic license に触れておきたい。こちらも字面だけからでは意味が想像しにくい言葉だろう。

どの英和辞典にも、まず「詩的許容」と書かれているが、もちろんこれだけではなく、「文芸作品や創作の効果のために破格・逸脱が許されること」「効果のため普通の文法・論理・事実などに反することが許されること」などと補足しているので、何となくわかった気になる。

この言葉が使われている例として、

- Memory takes a lot of poetic license.

という文は、いくつかのサイトで取り上げられているので、ある程度よく使われる言い回しなのではないかと思ってさらに調べると、劇作家テネシー・ウィリアムズ Tennessee Williams の言葉ということだ。

これを用例にあげている「ランダムハウス英和大辞典」は、「記憶は自分に都合のいいように（勝手に修正）してしまうものだ」という訳をつけている。

しかし、poetic license という言葉の意味はわかった（という気になった）としても、肝心なのは、具体的にどういうものが poetic license なのか、ということだろう。

Wikipedia は一例として、シェイクスピアの「ジュリアス・シーザー」に出てくるアントニーの演説をあげて説明していた。シーザー暗殺を正当化しようとするブルータスを「ほめ殺し」にすることで逆に貶める、超絶的な名演説の冒頭部分である。

- For example, Mark Antony's "Friends, Romans, Countrymen, lend me your ears" from Shakespeare's Julius Caesar would technically require the word "and" before "countrymen", but the conjunction "and" is omitted to preserve the rhythm of iambic pentameter.

つまり、３つの言葉を並べる際に必要である and を意図的に省いて、iambic pentameter の韻律を守るようにしている、ということである（iambic pentameter は「弱強五歩格の詩」ということだそうだ）。

以下、英語圏の辞書にある説明や用例を引用しよう。別にシェイクスピアのような本格的な文学作品だけに使われる技法ではないらしいことがうかがえる。

前回のエントリで、poetic justice は「詩や小説に現れる理想的正義」と辞書にあるが、実際には詩や小説以外でも使われている、と書いたが、poetic license もそうした点でちょっと似ているといえるかもしれない。

なお license はアメリカ英語で、イギリス英語では licence と綴る。下記３つめの「ケンブリッジ学習辞典」はこちらの綴りで表記されている。
