apples-to-apples comparison 「同じ種類を比べる」 [読書と英語]
いま読んでいる本に apples-to-apples comparison という表現が出てきて、おもしろいと思ったので取り上げてみたい。
大量の小説を統計学的に分析して、そこで使われている言葉から、作品・作家の特徴や”文章指南”の妥当性などを明らかにしていくという興味深い本だ。
たとえば、文を綴る心得として、ヘミングウェイは「副詞を多用しないように」と述べたそうだが、その指南は果たして妥当なものなのだろうか。
-ly の形を取る副詞について、評判の本や評価の高い本をアマチュア作家の自主発表作品と比較したところ、後者の方がずっとこうした副詞を多用していたそうだ。今回の表現はそれを説明しているくだりに出てきた。
- The 300-plus megahits in the bestseller category averaged just 115 -ly adverbs per 10,000 words. And the 100 award winners have a median of 114 -ly adverbs. It's not an apples-to-apples comparison, but the novels that sell well in bookstores come in with 25% fewer adverbs than the average novel that amateur writers post online.

文字通りの「リンゴをリンゴと比較する」ということからも、「同じ種類どうしを比べること」とか「条件の揃った比較」ということだろうと当たりがつく。
意外なことに手持ちの辞書には記述がなく、例外的に見つかったのは、
- 同種のものどうしで、同じ土俵で（競争する、比較する）

だけで、apple to apple という単数形で見出しにしている。
英語圏のオンライン辞書を見ると、こちらは apples to apples と複数形での記載が見つかった。

Used with reference to a comparison regarded as valid because it concerns two things that are fundamentally the same.
There is no apples-to-apples comparison when comparing a foreign currency to USD.
"People have to understand that this comparison is not necessarily apples to apples," he said.
While we try to maintain an apples to apples test environment, we feel the different brands of comparable products should have minimal impact on the final scores.
Of course this is based on an apples to apples scenario.

今回の表現を拾った本は、大量の著作物を電子データ化して蓄積するという、現代ならではの技術を駆使したもので、ほんの少し前なら不可能だったことだろう。その分析結果と考察が本当に妥当なものかは私には判断できないが、文章にかかわるさまざまなテーマを取り扱っていて、興味深く読める。
