Let's go Brandon! ～バイデン批判のスローガン [アメリカ政治]
このところ Let's go Brandon. という言葉をアメリカがらみの記事でよく目にする。英語の流行語を追うのは異国の非ネイティブの手に余るし、多くは廃れていくので「労多くして功少なし」といえるだろうが、この言葉はしばらくメディアを賑わすと思われるうえ、由来もおもしろいのでメモしておきたい。
今年１０月にアメリカ南部アラバマ州で行われた自動車レースで Brandon Brown というレーサーが優勝した。その際、観客がバイデン大統領を罵倒して "F*** Joe Biden!" 「くたばれバイデン」と唱和したが、テレビ中継は「観客が "Let's go Brandon." と歓呼している」と報じた、というものだ。
ネット時代とあってすぐに拡散し、バイデン大統領の支持がガタ落ちであることを象徴するものとなった。そして、大統領の名前自体は出てこないこの言葉が、今や反バイデンのスローガンとして使われるようになっている。ブランドン・ブラウン氏もびっくりしていのではないか。
最近も、この言葉がメディアで広く報じられる出来事があった。
クリスマスの時期にアメリカでは「サンタクロースを追跡しよう」という恒例の催しがあり、このブログでも以前取り上げたことがある（→こちら）。それにあわせてバイデン夫妻が一般から電話を受けるというイベントで、ある男性からこの言葉が飛び出したのだ。
- Biden and his wife Jill Biden were taking calls into the North American Aerospace Defense Command Santa Tracker, which follows the progress of Santa’s reindeer-guided sleigh for millions of children.
At the end of one call, a parent who gave his name as Jared said, "Merry Christmas and Let's go Brandon."
"Let's go Brandon, I agree," a relaxed Biden responded, before asking Jared if he was in Oregon. By that point, the call was disconnected.

この言葉を受けたバイデン大統領の "I agree." という答えが、さらに話題を呼んだ。大統領はこの流行語を知らず、額面通りにカーレーサーのことと思ったのか。それともバイデン批判の意味を知っていたのだろうか、だとしたらなぜ（文字通りには）それを認めるような答えを言ったのか。
電話をかけた男性は、和やかな感じで話していて突然この言葉を発したが、その後の取材に「ジョークのつもりだった」と答えている。大統領はとっさにこう答えてしまったのかもしれないが、いずれにせよいろいろな憶測を呼ぶものとなり、プラスとは言い難いエピソードとなったといえるだろう。
今回取り上げた Let's go Brandon. は Wikipedia がさっそく見出し項目を設けており、少し長いが冒頭部分を引用しよう。

The slogan has become well known through use by Republican politicians and critics of Biden.The phrase quickly spread to popular culture, with rap songs using the phrase placing high on record charts.

自動車レースの中継で今回の言葉を紹介したリポーターについて、ウェブの記事では「観衆の罵倒の言葉を聞き違えた」という説と「わざと言い換えた」という説の両方が流布しているが、Wikipedia の下記の記述によれば、どちらなのか真相は不明だという。
- Fans were chanting "Fuck Joe Biden", and this became clearly audible to viewers of the broadcast. On the live broadcast, while wearing a headset, reporter Stavast stated, "You can hear the chants from the crowd, 'Let's go, Brandon!'" It is unclear whether Stavast misunderstood the chant or whether she intentionally misquoted it as "Let's Go Brandon".

冒頭に書いたように、流行語の多くはいずれは消えていく運命にあるが、バイデン大統領が不支持にあえぐ状態が続く限り、今回の言葉はしばらく見聞きするものになりそうだ。
