fur 「水あか」「舌の汚れ」

前回は ring を「浴槽についた垢」を表すのに使えることを取り上げたが、連想で別の単語 fur のちょっとおもしろい意味について短く書いてみたい。

fur は「毛皮」「毛皮の衣服」だが、舌の表面にできる白っぽい「舌苔」や、水道管の内側などにつく「水あか」という意味もある。主としてイギリス英語だという。動詞としてそうしたものが生じることも表す。

汚れに使うとは、「毛皮」とはえらい違いだが、柔らかい毛のように見えるからだろう。

この意味で自分の学習ノートにメモしていたのは、００７ことジェームズ・ボンドものの原作「サンダーボール作戦」で見つけたもので、舌苔についての動詞の実例だった。
