stiff drink 「強い酒」

前回の stiff price 「高くつく代償」からの連想で、stiff drink という言い方について触れておきたい。この stiff は「アルコール度が高い」という意味なので、「強い酒」のことである。

下記は2016年のアメリカ大統領選挙で選挙戦が行われていた当時の「ニューヨーク・タイムズ」紙にあった実例で、「共和党のトランプ候補よりも、民主党のヒラリー・クリントン候補の方が強硬派・タカ派なのだ」と論じるオピニオン記事である。

「ヒラリーが好むのは、マッチョでタフガイのタイプの男性だ。そう、たとえばドナルド・トランプみたいな」と、皮肉っぽく結んでいる記事の最終部分だ。本来 stiff drink が目的でこの記事をファイルしたのではないのだが、たまたまこの表現が含まれていたので引用しよう。

- As secretary of state, she hit it off with Gen. Stanley McChrystal and David Petraeus. And she loved to have a stiff drink with Bob Gates and John McCain.
She has a weakness for big, swaggering, rascally he-men.
Like Donald Trump.

ここで、オバマ政権の国務長官時代のヒラリーが強い酒を酌み交わした男性のひとりとして、当時の国防長官 Bob Gates （ロバート・ゲーツ）の名前が出てくる。

ゲーツ氏の回想録はこのブロクでも何回か取り上げたことがあるが、あらためて開いて探してみたら、彼の方でも、「ヒラリーとはウマが合った」と書いているくだりがあった。

- Hillary had been around long enough, both in the White House and in the Senate, to understand exactly what I was talking about, and she readily agreed on the importance of us working together. Indeed, we would develop a very strong partnership, in part because it turned out we agreed on almost every important issue.

一方でゲーツ元長官は、当時の副大統領だったジョー・バイデン氏（現大統領）については、「主要な外交政策や安全保障の問題では、過去ほとんど常に間違った判断をしてきた」と同書で手厳しく評している。

- Joe is a man of integrity, incapable of hiding what he really thinks, and one of those rare people you know you could turn to for help in a personal crisis. Still, I think he has been wrong on nearly every major foreign policy and national security issue over the past four decades.

脱線が長くなったが、アルコール度が高いことを表す stiff の説明や例文を英語圏の辞書から引用しよう。

(of an alcoholic drink) strong.
I don't drink at lunchtime but I like a stiff whisky at 6.30 in the evening and perhaps another later on.

この意味の stiff を自分で使うのは、なかなかパッと思いつかず厳しい、という人もいるかもしれないが、soft drink の反対として stiff drink を覚えるのがひとつの手かもしれない。

ぴったり soft の対になるのは hard だとすれば、hard drink も「強い酒」に使えそうだが、ネットにある情報によると、この組み合わせは "an alcoholic beverage that is distilled rather than fermented" を指すという。つまりウィスキー、ブランデー、ジンといった蒸留酒のことで、ビールやワイン、日本酒のような醸造酒には使わないということになりそうだ。
