a feather in your cap 「お手柄」「自慢の種」（刑事コロンボ「殺人処方箋」） [刑事コロンボ]
週末に見たアメリカのテレビドラマに a feather in someone's cap という表現が出てきた。文字通りには帽子についた羽根ということになるだろうが、これで「誇りになるもの」「功績」「名誉」という意味がある。
これまで何度もこのブログで取り上げている「刑事コロンボ」 Columbo の記念すべき第１作「殺人処方箋」 Prescription: Murder に出てきたものだ。私はこのシリーズをブルーレイの全集で持っているが、何度見ても飽きないエピソードが目白押しである。
襲われて生死の境をさまよっている女性の夫の友人である地方検事が、捜査を担当する Lieutenant Columbo に「早くホシをあげろ」と急かしている場面だ。以下Aが地方検事、Bがコロンボである。
A: Any progress so far?
B: Well, it's a little early, but sooner or later something usually breaks.
A: Let's make that sooner. Right, Lieutenant?
B: Try my best.
A: I'm sure you will. I don't think I have to remind you that this could be quite a little feather in your cap. Wrap it up and everybody is happy.
Let's make that sooner. とか I'm sure you will. あるいは I don't think I have to remind you など、表面的な言い方こそていねいだが、「手際よく解決すれば a feather in your cap になる」としてプレッシャーをかけていることはみえみえだ。
ちなみに「刑事コロンボ」は舞台劇が単発のテレビドラマとして制作され、それが好評でシリーズ化されたものだ。その劇（同名の Prescription: Murder）の脚本も持っているが、よく練られた作品と評価されたのか、TV版はクライマックスをのぞけばほとんど内容を変えていないことがわかる。
ちなみに上記の場面は原作の劇にもあり、そちらも少し引用すると、
- A: By the way, I don't have to tell you that this could be a nice feather in your cap. It's getting quite a play in the papers. Wrap it up and everybody looks good.
B: Yes, sir.

なお、どうして「帽子の羽根」が「名誉」になるかというと、「インディアンなどが、戦闘での勇敢さを示すのに使う羽飾りから」（リーダーズ英和辞典）と、北アメリカ先住民の慣習に由来するとしている。ただ英語圏の説明を見ると、

とある。つまり「戦闘での勇敢さ」というのは現代の視点から先住民に配慮して婉曲的に表したもので、実はもっとなまなましいものだったということになりそうだ。
「殺人処方箋」の原作は、推理ものというより追い詰められていく犯人を主人公とした心理劇で、コロンボは「何を考えているのかわからない謎の刑事」として描かれていた。TVドラマはクライマックスを舞台劇とはまったく変えてミステリらしい形とし、主人公をコロンボにしたが、それでも原作の「得体のしれない刑事」の要素を残していて、独特の味わいのある作品になっている。
