lick your wounds 「痛手から立ち直ろうとする」「再起を図る」

前回の lick からの連想で、lick one's wounds という表現を取り上げよう。文字通りには「傷をなめる」だが、イディオムとしてはさらにその先の状態を指して使われる。

下記は、以前取り上げたことがある傑作ノンフィクションで拾ってメモしていた実例である。

経済的な危機から国（アメリカ）が立ち直りを図っていた、ということを指している。動物は傷をなめて直そうとするが、比喩的な意味での傷から回復を図ることを指して使われるわけである。
