If the cap [shoe] fits... [名言・ことわざ]
先日から書いている cap について続けるが、If the cap fits, wear it. というイディオムがある。イギリス式の言い方で、アメリカ英語では cap の代わりに shoe あるいは hat となる。If ... fits という前半だけでも使われる。
ある英和辞典には、「その評言が思い当たるなら自分のことをさしていると思え」とあるが、この訳だけでは意味や使い方がわかりにくいのではないだろうか。英英辞典の定義と実例にあたってみよう。
つまり、なるほどと思う批判を耳にしたら、たとえ自分に向けられたものでなくても、それをわが事のように考えて改めるべきは改めよ、ということのようだ。
この cap と shoe については、次のような説明もあった。
つまりこの表現での cap は、道化師の帽子を指していた可能性があるというわけだ。これだけではよくわからないが、道化師は王様に対して耳の痛いことを直言できる唯一の人物だったことと関係があるのだろうか。
ついでだが、foolscap という紙がある。a large size of paper, approximately 34.3 cm (13.5 in.) by 43.2 cm (17 in.), mostly used for writing and printing ということで、透かしに道化師帽の模様が描かれていたことに由来するという。
私が愛読しているシャーロック・ホームズものには、このフールスキャプ紙が登場する。よく知られている短編「赤毛組合」 The Red-headed League では、copy out the "Encyclopaedia Britannica" という仕事をすることになった赤毛の男が筆写に使った紙がこれだった。次の英文は、この奇妙な仕事に向かう時の様子を、この男が後日ホームズに説明している場面である。

- used as a way of suggesting that someone should accept a generalizd remark or criticism as applying to themselves.
- When you say to someone if the shoe fits, you are suggesting that a criticism made in general may fit their own behavior.

というせりふがありましたね。
日本語字幕は「うそつき」となってましたが、「身に覚えがあるだろ」とか「自分の胸に聞いてみな」とかのほうが良いんじゃないのかなと思いました。
