ersatz 「代用の」「本物でない」 [読書と英語]
今回も、すきま時間に再読を続けている短編シリーズ「黒後家蜘蛛の会」の原書に出てきた言葉を紹介したい。ersatz は字面から受ける印象の通りドイツ語由来の単語で、英和辞典には「代用の」「模造の」「間にあわせの」「にせの」といった訳語が並んでいる。名詞としても使われる。
シリーズ第３巻に収録された作品で、ある人物の描写に使われていた。
- Thatcher's round face and plump cheeks would have made him a natural to play Santa Clause at any Christmas benefit, but he would have needed padding just the same, for his body had that peculiar ersatz slimness that seemed to indicate forty pounds recently lost.
("The Missing Item" from "Casebook of the Black Widowers" by Isaac Asimov)
クリスマスの慈善イベントでサンタを演じるのにぴったりの丸くふっくらとした顔の持ち主だが、体格の方は詰め物をしないとつとまらないほどスリムで、最近40ポンド（18キロ）も痩せたかのような人物、ということになる。peculiar ersatz slimness は、顔とはあまりにも不釣り合いで不自然なほど奇妙な痩せ方、という感じだろうか。
手製の英語学習ノートには、以下のような実例がメモしてあった。。
- Vienna, he wrote, 'had an ersatz gaiety and smelled of corruption'.

- Neither Bush nor Cheney held a face-to-face interview for the job with Keating, Alexander, Ridge, Hagel, Kasich, Engler, or any of the other ersatz finalists.

ここに出てくる Keating 以下の人名は、2000年のアメリカ大統領選挙に立候補したブッシュの参謀チェイニーが、さも副大統領候補に検討していると思わせるような電話をした相手である。実際にはチェイニー本人がブッシュの running mate となった。そうした目くらまし、当て馬として名前を挙げられた政治家たちを ersatz finalists と表したのだろう。

続いて英語圏の辞書から引用しよう。ひとつ目の「ウェブスター」の用例 ersatz intellectuals を見ていたら、「インテリもどき」という言葉が頭に浮かんだが、まあ間違いとまでは言えないかと思う。

いずれにせよ、「ニセモノ」、あるいは代用品だとしても「ホンモノに劣る」というニュアンスが込められているといえそうだ。
なお発音は /ˈeəzæts/ あるいは /ˈersɑːts/ だが、ドイツ語では s が通常 /z/ になるので、前者はそれにならったのだろう。

この単語の発音はエァのように二重母音とずっと思ってましたが、長母音のもあるのですね。英語的な音に変化したのでしょう。代用（代替）品、間に合わせ、急ごしらえなどの意味だけかと思っていたら、本物ではないという意味もある。代替品だから本物ではないのは当然ですね。口頭表現だと、話者と聞き手双方の英語力が試されそうで、使いにくそうです。本年１回目の記事、楽しく拝見しました。
