rizz ～オックスフォード版・2023年の英単語 [Word of the Year]
年末を迎え、英語圏の諸団体が選ぶ恒例の「今年の英単語」の時期がやってきた。これまで発表された結果の中でもっとも興味深いと思ったのは、イギリスのオックスフォード大学出版が選定した rizz である。
- Oxford University Press has named "rizz" as its word of the year, highlighting the popularity of a term used by Generation Z to describe someone's ability to attract or seduce another person.

- ‘rizz’ is a colloquial noun, defined as ‘style, charm, or attractiveness; the ability to attract a romantic or sexual partner’.
Etymologically, the term is believed to be a shortened form of the word ‘charisma’, taken from the middle part of the word, which is an unusual word formation pattern. Other examples of this word formation pattern include ‘fridge’ (from ‘refrigerator’) and ‘flu’ (from ‘influenza’).

つまり「人を引きつける魅力」のことだが、若いZ世代の言葉ということもあってか、恋愛や性的な面でよく使われるように受け取れる。
そして charisma が由来らしいということだ。「カリスマ」と日本語になっているが、「ス」にあたるところの発音は /z/ なので、rizz となったのであろう。また単語の真ん中部分を切り取って出来た珍しい単語の一例とのこと。
大西洋をはさんだ対岸のアメリカの老舗辞書 Merriam-Webster は、「2023年の英単語」に authentic を選んだが、その以外の有力単語の筆頭として、この rizz をあげていた。
なお上記 Oxford の文中に出てくる style だが、日本語の「スタイル」がもっぱら身体的な意味合いで使われるのに対して、英単語の方は、広く立ち振る舞いなどの型や様式を示し、体つきにはあまり使われないものと思う。
とはいえここでの style はそうした本来の意味よりも、また rizz 自体も元の charisma よりも、もっと世俗的・下世話な意味合いで使われているのだろうかと考えたりもする。
rizz は動詞としても使われるという。

ところで英語圏の記事を読むと、「テイラー・スウィフトのファンを表す Swiftie を押しのけて rizz が選ばれた」という記述もいくつか目にしたので、こちらも流行語となっているのだろう。
私は若い頃、音楽はさんざん洋モノを聞いたもので英語学習にも役立ったが、初老になってしまった今、彼女は名前を知っている程度である。雑誌TIMEが恒例の「今年の人」"Person of the Year" に今回は Taylor Swift を選んだと知った時は、「タイム誌もついにお固い選定とは決別したか」との感を強くした。
ちなみに私はタイムが「生成AI」を選ぶのではと思っていたが、見事にはずれた。学生だった1983年、「今年の人」に代えて "Machine of the Year" として「コンピューター」を選んだことがあり、大いに話題となったことが頭にあったためだが、時代はさらに変わったようだ。
なお「他人を引きつける力」を表すおもしろい単語として mojo があり、以前取り上げたことがある（→こちら）。もともと「魔法」「魔除け」といったややおどろおどろしい意味合いがある。また、他人を操るような力を持つ人を表す Svengali は、このブログを始めた初期に知った単語であり（→こちら）、ついでに挙げておきたい。
