Svengali とは何か

ビートルズの伝記 "The Love You Make" を読んでいたら、突然 Svengali という単語が出てきた。固有名詞のようだが、そんな人物や地名はそれまで出てこなかったはず。しかし響きが面白そうだ。そう思いながら辞書を引くと、「人の心を操る人物」という訳語が載っていた。

強勢は後ろの-a-にある。英英辞典の説明も引用しておこう。

- one who exerts controlling or mesmeric influence on another

- somebody who controls and manipulates somebody else, usually for evil purposes

さらに説明を読むと、イギリスの作家 George du Maurier が19世紀末に発表した "Trilby" という小説に出てくる人物で、ヒロインを催眠術でたぶらかす音楽家の名前ということがわかった。

Svengali is the name of a fictional character in George du Maurier's 1894 novel Trilby. A sensation in its day, the novel created a stereotype of the evil hypnotist that persists to this day. （中略）

The word "Svengali" has entered the language meaning a person who, with evil intent, manipulates another into doing what is desired. It is frequently used for any kind of coach who seems to exercise an extreme degree of domination over a performer (especially if the person is female or believes he or she can only perform in the presence of the coach).

Wikipedia のこの項には、Svengali に由来する他の作品がいろいろ載っている。それでわかるように、この人物は当時、相当な話題となり、一般名詞化したらしい。また影響はそれだけにとどまらなかった。

つまり、この小説は、あの「オペラ座の怪人」の原作が生まれるきっかけにもなったらしい。ついでに辞書には in the altogether という表現について old-fashioned, informal とあり、もはやあまり使いではなさそうだが、何となく「丸見え」「丸出し」「すっぽんぽん」という日本語が頭に浮かんだ。

さらにこの小説は、これまで何度も映画化されていた。1915年の無声映画、邦題「モデルの生涯」から始まり、一番新しいものは1983年の邦題「スヴェンガリの魔力」で、出演しているのは、ピーター・オトゥールとジョディ・フォスター。また、音楽のタイトルになっていることもわかった。

ところでこの単語、複数の英和辞典が 「Du Maurier の小説に由来」と書いていた。しかしこれでは有名なあの 「レベッカ」を書いた Daphne du Maurier を連想するので、不適切ではないだろうか。

George という名前を見て、文学は素人の私でも女流作家のデュ・モーリアとは別人と気づいたくらいだから、辞書を執筆する専門家にわからないはずはなかろう。しかし、ならば混同を避けるためにファーストネームは落とさずに説明すべきではないか。しかもこうした記述が複数の辞書にあるとは、どういうことなのだろうか。

そしてさらに調べたら、作者 George 氏はなんと、混同する恐れのある、その Daphne du Maurier の祖父であることがわかって驚いた。彼は挿絵画家でもあり、作品もネットで見ることができた。

さて、ビートルズの本にあった Svengali は、そこだけでは文脈上わかりにくいので、ネットで見つけた実例をいくつか書いてみよう。最初はポール・マッカートニーについての文だが、今回の本にあったものではない。またブッシュ大統領の懐刀カール・ローブ補佐官は、下記の例以外にも、しばしば Svengali になぞらえられている。

- (George) Martin has retired from producing, but he remains the artistic Svengali in McCartney's life.

- ... the boy’s mother had a “Svengali-like ability” to make her children lie in testimony.

- Karl Rove, Mr Bush's political Svengali, moved into damage-control mode.
