コヴェントリーにまつわる英語（その３）

劇画「ゴルゴ13」をきっかけにした、コヴェントリーにちなむ英語について続ける。このイギリスの都市は軍需産業があったためナチスの標的になったそうだが、近代工業化される以前は織物業が盛んだった。そこから as true as Coventry blue という表現が生まれたのは、ある意味、先日取り上げた send to Coventry よりも納得できる。

その表現をどう知ったのか覚えていないが、自分の学習ノートには true blue という表現に添える形で書かれていて、関連づけて学んだらしい。しかし true blue と違って実例にお目にかかった記憶はなく、実はほとんど忘れかけていた。手持ちの辞書にも見当たらない。

ネットには、こんな記述があった。

Coventry was formerly noted for its woollens, and subsequently acquired such a reputation for its dyeing that the expression "as true as Coventry blue" became proverbial.

In the 15th and 16th centuries Coventry was famous for a superior blue dye. From this was coined the phrase "As true as Coventry Blue", referring to someone of the highest integrity, or nowadays just 'true blue'.

辞書で true blue を引くと、

- completely loyal to a person or belief
- marked by unswerving loyalty (as to a party)
- unwaveringly loyal or faithful; staunch; unchangingly true. - genuine
- (BrE) strongly supporting the British Conservative Party

由来については、Coventry に求めるオンライン辞書がある一方で、そうでないものもあった。

- Of inflexible honesty and fidelity; -- a term derived from the true, or Coventry, blue, formerly celebrated for its unchanging color.

そこでもう少し調べてみた。The Phrase Finder というサイト

は、まずコヴェントリー起源説について書いている。

'True blue' is supposed to derive from the blue cloth that was made at Coventry, England in the late middle ages. The town's dyers had a reputation for producing material that didn't fade with washing, i.e. it remained 'fast' or 'true'. The phrase 'as true as Coventry blue' originated then and is still used (in Coventry at least).

余談だが fast は、「色落ちしない」や、「（縛り方・結び方が）しっかりした」という意味があり、ご存じなかった方は「意外な意味を持つ単語」として覚えておいて損はない。

この文章は、さらに異説を紹介してそれらを証拠不足と退けたあと、次のように述べている。

The change from the literal 'fast' coloured cloth to the allusory 'steadfast' loyal supporters came around the time that (John) Ray was writing his book of proverbs (in 1670).

The Covenanters were a group of 17th century Scottish Presbyterians who swore to uphold the National Covenant and oppose the rule of James I of Scotland. They wore blue as their badge and those who unequivocally supported the cause were called 'true blue'. (中略）

The Covenanters are no longer active but conservative politics still maintains an association with the phrase. Blue was later adopted as the colour of the Tory Party in England (later called the Conservative Party).

つまりコヴェントリーにからんで true blue という表現ができ、それが Covenanters の活動の影響を受けて意味が広がった、と考えればいいのだろうか。辞書によって異なる説明も、どちらも間違いとはいえないわけで、言葉の由来は単純ではないということであろう。

なお、上記の文章が紹介している異説の中には、１年前、安倍総理が就任したときに取り上げた blue blood の blue と同じというものもあった。
