「より良い」ではない better

１年前のエントリを見返したらカズオ・イシグロの小説 "The Remains of the Day" について書いていた。その時に取り上げた、"The evening's the best part of the day." という言葉から連想したのが、比較級を使った the better part of という表現だ。「より良い部分」のように取ると間違いになる場合があるので注意が必要だ。

たとえばネットのある記事に、次のような文が出てくる。

I had spent the better part of a week in Paris, much of that time looking at paintings, and now I had a couple of days to see where some of that art was created.

「一週間のうち、とりわけ楽しい時をすごしたのはパリにいた日々だった」というように解釈したとしたら、果たしてそれは正しいだろうか。

英英辞典は、この表現を次のように説明している。

- most of something, especially a period of time; more than half of something

- almost all of; most of

英和辞典には、「半分より多い、大半」「大部分」などと書かれている。実例をいくつか引用しよう。

- I waited for the better part of an hour.
（一時間近く待ち続けた）

- I've spent the better part of my life studying history.

- I've spent the better part of my life fighting the Cardasians.

最後の文は、テレビドラマ "Star Trek the Next Generation" のセリフから拾ったものである。

さらに、better なのだから best も、ということだろうか、次のような言い方もある。辞書に載っていた用例と、私の学習ノートにメモしてあった例から。

- the best part of a week
（一週間のほとんど）

- He remained there for the best part of a month--and within days was displaying his cantankerous self, complaining at the noise the workmen were making, even though the day he chose to complain was a Sunday, when the workmen were all at home.

better part of ～の「better」を「より良い」と考える基本の発想をすっかりなくしている私です。(^_^;

この場合「part」という単語がﾎﾟｲﾝﾄで、better（よい）part（部分）とnot better（よくない）part（部分）との比較ということでしょうか。
