「アメリカがくしゃみをすれば日本はかぜをひく」 [和英表現]
sneeze からの連想を続ける。昨今のサブプライムローン問題や株安の連鎖を見ていると、アメリカのくしゃみはやはり凄い風圧を持つようだ。この「アメリカがくしゃみをすれば日本はかぜをひく」式の言い回し、内容は日本独自のものと思うが、表現のパターンとしてはちゃんと英語にある。

ネットで実例を調べると、「アメリカが…」という内容が目立つが(日本だけがこう考えているわけではないことがわかる)、それ以外の「応用例」もあった。また when... ではなく、if... も使われている。いくつかニュース記事などには、以下のように使われた例があった。

言語が違えば文化も違うのも当然と考えてしまいますが、意外と同じ発想の表現が日英で多いのは興味深いです。
こういう表現を発見できたとき、言葉を学ぶ楽しさを実感してしまいます。

英語道 さん、コメントありがとうございます。私はこの「アメリカがくしゃみをすれば…」は、英語の表現を見た人が考え出したのではないかと思っているのですが(証拠はありません)、確かに似た発想の表現はありますよね。面白いものです。
