続・cause celeb

アメリカの大統領選挙で、マケイン氏がペイリン氏を running mate に選んだことを伝える英文に cause celeb という言葉が使われていたが、「有名人」と考えるとどうも文脈にそぐわないようだ、と前回書いた。もう少し辞書を見ていると、綴りが似た cause célèbre という別の言葉があることに気づく。

表記からしてフランス語から来ているらしいとわかるが、辞書には次のような説明がある。

- 有名な(裁判)事件[論争]；大きな論議を呼び起こす問題[事件]

- (pl. causes célèbres pronunc. same) a controversial issue arousing great public interest
ORIGIN French,‘famous case’

- a legal case or public controversy that arouses great interest and becomes famous because of the issues or the people involved

Wikipedia によると、この表現は18世紀にさかのぼるという。

The phrase originated with the 37-volume Nouvelles Causes Célèbres, published in 1763, which was a collection of reports of well-known French court decisions from the 17th and 18th centuries.

前回の冒頭にあげた共和党大会の英文の例は、この表現に沿って考えても意味は通じるようだ。いやむｒしろ、cause-celeb となるのはマケイン氏やペイリン氏といった人物ではなく the campaign (of a 72-year-old white man) であると読めることから、こちらの方が内容や文脈から考えて適切とみるべきではないだろうか。

ネットで探すと、同じような使い方をしているとみられる cause celeb の例が見つかる。

ついでに cause célèbre の例。

cause celeb-re という綴りの例も少数ながらあった。

さらに、単刀直入に cause celeb とは何かという質問を見つけたが、その答えは cause célèbre について書かれている。

ということで、cause célèbre が cause celeb として綴られるようになっているのではないか、と考えた次第である。そもそも語源上 famous person を意味する celebrity と共通点があるはずだが、そこへ後者の使用が広まってきて影響を受けた、ということだろうか。

以上、私も主にネットで調べた例をもとに考えただけなので、誤りがあるかもしれない。cause celeb や cause célèbre について詳しい方がいらしたら、ご教示をいただければ幸いである。

さて、日本語の「セレブ」は celebrity から来ているはずだが、この２つは同じ意味と考えていいのだろうか。次回はこれについて書いてみたい。
