to the manor [manner] born

安倍総理について blue blood という形容詞を使った実例を先日紹介したが、もうひとつ、「ファイナンシャル・タイムズ」の記事に、to the manor born という、意味も blue blood と同じような意味を持つ表現があった。

- Many of Abe's friends say his smooth progress to the prime ministership is nothing less than fate. To the manor born, Abe is claiming the right so cruelly snatched from his much-admired father.

この表現を載せていた手持ちの辞書は唯一「リーダース英和辞典」で、「manner を見よ」とある。そちらを引くと、(as if) to the manner born として、「生来風習[高い身分]に慣らされている（かのように）；生来適している（かのように）」という説明が書かれていた。

さらに、立ち寄った書店で研究社の「英和大辞典」をのぞいてみたら、こちらは manor の項にしっかりと to the manor born が載っていて、「高貴の生まれで（to the manner born をもじったもの）」という、「リーダース」とはちょっと違った形の説明があった。

ネットで改めて調べると、to the manner born は

- accustomed to a position, custom, or lifestyle from or as if from birth
- accustomed by birth to a high position: He was a gentleman to the manner born.

などと定義されていて、あわせて、

- This expression is sometimes mistakenly rendered as “to the manor born.”
- The manner in this expression was later sometimes changed to manor, "the main house of an estate," and the idiom's sense became equated with "high-born" (and therefore accustomed to luxury), a way in which it is often used today.

と説明がされていた。

to the manner born は、シェイクスピアが考え出したものだそうだ。手元にあるマイケル・マクローン著「シェイクスピアの名セリフ」（ジャパンタイムズ）という本を見ると、Hamlet の第１幕第４場、ハムレットの台詞として載っている。

- But to my mind, though I am native here
And to the manner born, it is a custom
More honor'd in the breach than the observance.

この国に生まれ育ち、
この国の風習には十分慣れているはずのおれだが、
その習慣だけは守るよりも破るほうが名誉だと思う

さて、実例をあげた「ファイナンシャル・タイムズ」の2006年９月15日付けの記事は、"The son also rises" というタイトルで、"The Sun Also Rises" 「陽はまた昇る」をもじったものであろう。安倍氏を日本の近現代政治史の中に位置づけながら紹介した長大なもので、よく調べてあるなと思った。内容の当否は別として、アメリカのテレビにときに見られるようなハンバーガー的ニュース（という表現があるわけではないだろうが、そんな言葉が心に浮かんだ）とは、一味違ったものを感じた。
