scion, shoo-in など

新しい総理大臣に正式に選ばれた安倍晋三氏に関する英文記事から、引き続き「家柄がいい」「名家の出身」を表す単語として、今回は scion を取り上げることにする。

sc- で /s/、- i -は二重母音なので、発音は /sai-/ のようになる。- o - のところは schwa （あいまい母音）である。

- Abe, the conservative scion of a political dynasty, said when he launched his candidacy earlier this month: "I hope to create a beautiful Japan which is respected by the world and which children can be proud of."

辞書には a child or descendant of a family, especially a rich, famous, or important family などと定義されている。英和には「御曹司」という訳も載っていた。

この単語は、 「（つぎ木の）若枝・小枝」 (part of plant for grafting: a living shoot or twig of a plant used for grafting to a stock) という意味があり、これが転じて「御曹司」になったらしい。語源を見ると、

と書かれている。

さて、今回の総裁選は、以前のような派閥間の暗闘あるいは談合とは縁を切ったものとされ、かつ安倍氏の圧勝と総理の座が早くから確実視されていた点でも特徴的だったが、選挙に関連して時々目にする単語にも久しぶりに出会った。

- Shintaro Abe had been regarded as a shoo-in to become prime minister.

a candidate, competitor, etc., regarded as certain to win という意味の shoo-in は、競馬から来た言葉とのこと。Online Etymology Dictionary shoo には

- 1622, "to drive away by calling 'shoo,' " from the exclamation (1483), instinctive, cf. Ger. schu, It. scioia. Shoo-in "easy winner (especially in politics)" (1939) was originally a horse that wins a race by pre-arrangement (1928; the verb phrase shoo in in this sense is from 1908).

とある。なお辞書を見ると、強勢は前の shoo の方にある。日本人はこういう場合、とかく後ろに強勢を置きがちだとどこかで読んだ記憶があり、注意が必要だ。

さらに、直接関係はないが、heir apparent (a person who is most likely to succeed to the place of another) も芋づる式に連想した単語だ。

安倍氏を紹介する英文記事は、名だたる政治家一家の出であることや保守的な姿勢を紹介する一方で、経験が浅いこと、また総裁選などで示された政策が具体性に乏しいことなどをあげて、手腕は未知数、としたトーンも目立つように思った。「今後のお手並みを拝見」といったところだろう。
