お金の数にからんだ表現 [数にちなむ表現]
「２」にちなんだ単語・表現」の続きである。このところ、ろくな意味がない動詞ばかり集めたが、今回取り上げたいのは two cents や two a penny, twopence など、英米版「二銭銅貨」にからんだ表現である。
まず two cents または two cents' worth は、
- (colloquial) one's opinion or thoughts.
That's just my two cents; you can believe what you like.
- an opinion offered on a topic under discussion
send your two cents' worth to your senator
- an opinion, usually unsolicited and unwelcome:
Who asked you to add your two cents worth?
などとオンラインの辞典にある。send one's two cents' worth to の他に put in one's two cents という言い方もあり、私が時々のぞいている外国の某サイトの掲示板で、レギュラーの投稿者がしょっちゅう使っているので覚えた。
また two cents には
- a sum or object of very small value : practically nothing
- something of insignificant value; a paltry amount: We wouldn't give two cents for their chances of success.
という意味もある。
これから連想したのが a dime a dozen である。
- very common and not valuable; of little value
Don't listen to what she says, her stories are a dime a dozen.
Those 'antiques' are a dime a dozen.
- If a thing is very common and easy to get, we say it is "a dime a dozen." Example: "Do you think I should buy this now and bring it with us?" Answer: "Don't bother; those are a dime a dozen where we are going."
同じ意味で、two a penny というものもあった。こちらは主にイギリスで使われるようだ。
- (idiomatic, UK) very common; cheap
- of trifling worth
twopence は文字通り「２ペンス（貨）」 (tuppence) の以外の意味もある。
- (informal) anything at all: He didn’t care twopence.
- a very small amount; a whit: didn't care twopence about politics.
発音は注意が必要だ。第１強勢がある最初の母音は two の /u:/ ではなく、「タペンス」のようになる。もっとも米式では two pence のようにしてもいいようだ。
ついでに、threepenny も of trifling worth; worth or costing very little といった意味。クルト・ヴァイル Kurt Weill が作曲した "Mack the Knife" 「マック・ザ・ナイフ」のメロディが知られているブレヒト Bertolt Brecht の原作 "Die Dreigroschenoper" は、邦題が「三文オペラ」、英語のタイトルは "The Threepenny Opera" である。
さらには sixpenny にも、やはり of trifling value; cheap; paltry という定義が載っている。そういえば画家ゴーギャンを描いたサマセット・モームの「月と六ペンス」 "The Moon and Sixpence" は、大昔に一度翻訳を読んだだけで、もはや内容を覚えていないが、この sixpenny に何かかけてあるのだろうか。
取るに足らぬ penny は実はまだある。ten a penny も似たような意味で使われるらしい。
