「２」にちなんだ表現・落穂拾い

少し前から「数字にちなんだ英語表現」を整理しているが、「２」について、これまであげた以外の言い回しをいくつか書き留めておこう。

運動にも関係するのが second wind である。何か激しく身体を動かして息が切れたあと、ひと息ついて呼吸が楽になることをこう呼ぶそうだ。そこから「新たな活力」「元気の回復」という意味で使うことができるという。

restored energy or strength, enabling one to continue an activity or task
She had dinner and got a second wind to finish painting.

この wind は風ではなく、「呼吸」のことで、lose one's wind だと「息切れする」ということになる。

second thought 「再考」「考え直すこと」はおなじみの言い回しだと思うが、second sight は「千里眼」「予知能力」である。

- the ability to know what will happen in the future
- clairvoyance: the supposed ability to see things that the physical eye cannot see, especially events taking place in the future or elsewhere

secondary sex characteristic は、人間の成長過程での「第２次性徴」。読めば字の如し、何ということはないが、以前、自分で表現しようと思った際に何と言っていいのかわからず、後で調べてみて「なあんだ」と思った。難しいものだ。

成長にからんで、second tooth は「永久歯」 permanent tooth を指す。

- any of the 32 teeth that replace the deciduous teeth of early childhood and (with luck) can last until old age
- one of the first temporary teeth of a young mammal (one of 20 in children)
- one of the second set of teeth in mammals that grow as the milk teeth are shed. Humans have 32 permanent teeth

「乳歯」は、ここに出てきた milk tooth や deciduous tooth のほか、baby tooth また primary tooth といってもいいようだ。

面白いことに、「歯が生える」は cut という動詞で表すことができる。

- to grow (a tooth or teeth) through the gum: The baby is cutting his teeth.

- grow through the gums; The new tooth is cutting.

大人はやがて子どもに還るということであろうか、second childhood はしばしば senility や dotage の euphemism として使われるようだ。

- mental infirmity as a consequence of old age; sometimes shown by foolish infatuations
- an offensive term for a condition associated with aging that manifests itself in behavior regarded as resembling that of a child

- And yet our stereotype of an old person is someone in her "second childhood," senile, perhaps suffering dementia or other problems associated with diseases like Alzheimer's.
