umpteen, umpteenth 「数えきれないほどの」

前回紹介した『「エコノミック・アニマル」は褒め言葉だった』によれば、マッカーサー元帥が日本人を評するのに使った「12歳」には、「まだティーンエージャーにはなっていない」という意味がこめられているということだった。この -teen から連想した単語として、umpteen と umpteenth を取り上げてみよう。

英和辞典を見ると、前者に「無数の」、後者には「何度目になるかわからないほど」といった訳語が載っている。なお /p/ は発音されないこともある。

英英辞典の説明や例文をあげてみよう。

umpteen

- (informal, often slightly derogatory)
relatively large but unspecified in number

umpteenth

さらに、「ティーンエージャー」など年齢の -teen と関係があるのか、語源についての記述を見て確かめてみよう。

- umpty (colloquial name for the dash "--" in Morse code) + teen, by analogy with the cardinal numbers from thirteen to nineteen.
- blend of umpty (such and such) and -teen (as in thirteen)
- Origin: 1915-20; ump(ty), fanciful designation for an indeterminate number (with -ty as in twenty, etc.) + -teen

然り、年齢の -teen を、such and such という意味を持ち、モールス信号のダッシュを指すのにも使われる umpty につけてできたというわけだ。といっても、なぜそういう組み合わせとなったのかという詳しい由来はわからなかった。誰かによる造語が広まったのだろうか。

ついでだが、モールス信号という呼称は考案者の名前に由来するが、調べたら Samuel Finley Breese Morse はアメリカ人だった。「モールス符号を考案したモース」のように表記している事典もある。

「モース」といえば硬度計のことも頭に浮かぶが、調べたらこちらは英語で Mohs' scale といい、発明したのはドイツ人の Friedrich Mohs であった。

In connection to the term "economic animal" may I ask you a question? Which Bhutto do you mean, Zulfikar Ali Bhutto or Benazir Bhutto(the daughter of the former)? If I remember correctly, "man is a political animal" is Aristotle's doctrine. Besides, man is a social animal, as is the case with many other animals. Needless to say, these terms are neutral.

I have stuck to the traditional usage of "man," meaning humanity, humankind, the human race, and so on in the above sentences although almost all feminists hate this "politically incorrect" use.

Chuck さん、「エコノミック・アニマル」を使ったとして上記の本で言及されているのは Zulfikar Bhutto の方です。この言葉は私も子供の頃から聞いているくらい以前から使われているものなので、特に父親の方だと書く必要もないかと思っていました。不親切だったのでしたらすみません。

なお、これが（父親の）ブット首相の言葉であるということ、チャーチルが political animal と呼ばれていたということは、文中に書きましたように、あくまでこの本の記述を紹介しただけあり、その真偽について私が確かめたものではありません。
