「ブーツ」ではない boot さまざま

今回も「ブーツ」とは違う意味の boot について書くことにする。同じ綴りであるが、to boot という表現で使われている単語は、「ブーツ」とは由来自体が異なるという。

２つの boot の語源の違いは、辞書で確かめていただければありがたいが、このイディオムは「おまけに」「その上」といった意味である。

自分の学習ノートには、文頭で使われた例をメモしてあった。

All the new albums would net them an unprecedented 58￠royalty until 1972 and a 72￠royalty thereafter until 1976--an increase from a previous 39￠royalty per LP. To boot, reissues of early recordings would garner a 50￠royalty until 1972 and 72￠thereafter.

この boot 自体はもはや古い用法で、

1. Archaic. something given into the bargain.
2. Obsolete. a. advantage. b. remedy; relief; help.
3. Archaic. to be of profit, advantage, or avail (to):
It boots thee not to complain.

と説明されている。

boot といえば昨今は「コンピューターを起動する、システムを立ちあげる」という意味で使われるようになり、「ブート」「リブート」はもう日本語になっている。そういえば先日、映画などについて使われる reboot という単語を取り上げていた。

こちらは bootstrap という単語に由来するという。ブーツについていて履くときに使うつまみ loop attached to boot: a leather or fabric loop on the back or side of a boot to help pull it on のことで、ここからの連想らしい。

ちなみに by one's (own) bootstraps は by one's own efforts ということで、pull oneself up by one's (own) bootstraps というイディオムもあった。

to help oneself without the aid of others; use one's resources: I admire him for pulling himself up by his own bootstraps.

ついでに、イギリス英語でこの boot は車の後部のトランクを指す (an automobile trunk; a space at the back of a car for carrying luggage)。ネットにあった例。

I loaded my carrier bags into the boot of my car, then went to the petrol station.
