「無人島の一枚」と desert island discs

今回は雑学をひとつ。前回ＣＤの感想を書いた中で「無人島の一枚」という言葉を使ったが、英語では desert island discs という言い方を見かけることがある。同名のＢＢＣの番組があることを以前何かで読んで知ったのだが、どんなものかよくわからなかった。インターネットの時代になって、そうした情報を簡単に調べられるようになったのはありがたい。

ＢＢＣには、この番組のサイトがある。そこには次のような口上が書かれている。

Desert Island Discs is one of Radio 4's most popular and enduring programmes. Created by Roy Plomley in 1942, the format is simple: each week a guest is invited by Kirsty Young to choose the eight records they would take with them to a desert island.

1942年から続いている長寿番組であること、また、無人島 desert island に持っていくのは「一枚」ではなく「八枚」であった。

この程度の情報なら英和辞典にも載せているものがあるが、Wikipedia を見たらもう少し詳しい説明があった。その一部である（適宜改行した）。

(Desert Island Discs) is said by the Guinness Book of Records to be the longest-running music programme in the history of radio.

Guests are invited to imagine themselves as castaways on a desert island, and asked to choose the eight pieces of music they would take with them; discussion of their choices permits a review of their life.

Aside from the music they select, they are also permitted to take one book, excluding the Bible or other religious work and the complete works of Shakespeare (後略）

またここには、これまでの主なゲストの名前もあげられている。私の知らない名前にまじって、Paul McCartney, Johnny Cash, John Malkovich, Princess Margaret, George Clooney, J.K. Rowling, George Foreman, Stephen King, Stephen Hawking といった人物が出演したことがわかった。

次に、この題名を使った言い回しをネット上の例で見てみよう。

- XXX（曲名）is one of my desert island discs.

- If I was ever asked to select my "desert island discs", top of my list would be XXX.

- The recording is one of my favorites and is on my Desert Island Discs list.

- You can listen to this for hours on end and not get sick of it - or what in some classical circles has been blithely called the "Desert Island Disc" syndrome.
