w00tとl33t～続・2007年「流行語大賞」

タイトルの単語は typo ではない。前回書いた The American Dialect Society とは別に "Word of the Year" を決めているのが、辞書出版社の Merriam-Webster だ。ここが今回選んだのが前者の単語で、o の代わりに zero を２つ重ねる。また、このような表記をする言葉を後者のように呼ぶのだそうだ。3 は e の代わりである。

This year's winning word first became popular in competitive online gaming forums as part of what is known as l33t ("leet," or "elite") speak--an esoteric computer hacker language in which numbers and symbols are put together to look like letters.

w00t はオンラインのゲーマーの間で使われ始めたというが、オンラインの辞書によると、具体的な由来にはいくつかの説があるようだ。

Origin of word: When hackers had achieved "root access" on a target, they would shout "root", eventually as mistyping and slang took over, this became "woot". This evolved into a yell of accomplishment.

l33t は厳密にいえば leetspeak として詳しい記述があった。一部を引用するが、同じ leetspeak でも違う表記ができるのが面白い。

- The substitution of numeric digits or special characters for alphabetic letters; for example, "1337 5p34k" spells "leet speak."

- Coined from "elite speak," leetspeak is not the same as "geekspeak," "nerdspeak" or "AOL speak," which are terms that refer to acronyms, such as IMHO for "in my humble opinion." In true leetspeak, each letter is substituted with the numeric digit that looks most like it, such as a "3" for "E" and a "4" for "A."

- Numbers and symbols often replace the letters they resemble, so for example, the term "leetspeak" could be written as "!337$p34k". The character "!" replaces the letter L, "3" poses as a backwards letter E, and "7" is the letter T, etc. Other examples of character/letter replacement include using "8" for the letter B, "9" for G, and the number 0 for the letter O.

２つ目のサイトには w00t 以外の単語のリストがある。さらにネットを探せば、もっと情報が見つかることだろう。

さて Merriam-Webster 版「2007年の言葉」、次点 runner-up は facebook だった。アメリカ方言学会でも upper case で始まる Facebook として票を取ったが、ウェブスターの方では、動詞としていくつかの意味を持たされている。

また、笑ったのは blamestorm だった。ウェブスターの定義は量が多いので、Wiktionary から引用しよう。

Blend of blame and brainstorm

(noun) a session where a group discusses why something failed or was not achieved and decides who or what is at fault

(verb) to have a blamestorm

この他トップ10には、見かけないものにまじって、conundrum, quixotic, apathetic, hypocrite といった、中級以上向けのボキャブラリー本には載っていそうな単語も選ばれている。多数の得票があったからには何か印象を残す形で使われたのだろうが、背景説明がないのでよくわからない。

それはともかく、次に英語の番組を見る時には、w00t! という感嘆詞が使われるかどうか、耳をそばだててみることにしよう。
