part and parcel

先日取り上げた bricks and mortar や nuts and bolts からさらに連想したのが part and parcel (of) という表現である。大学生の時に何かで聞いたインタビューに出てきたが、早口で part'n parcel のように言っていたのが印象的だったので覚えた。

「骨子」「要点」「眼目」ということで、昨今使われる「キモ」にもあたるかもしれない。面白いことに、意味が似ている the nuts and bolts と違って、この表現は冠詞をつけないという。使われている単語が、ボルトやナットよりも抽象的なイメージがあるということだろうか。

- an essential, necessary, or integral part:
Her love for her child was part and parcel of her life.

- something that cannot be separated from a condition or activity.
Being recognized on the street is part and parcel of being a celebrity.

- be an essential feature or element
It's best to accept that some inconveniences are part and parcel of travel.

「重要な部分」という訳語も辞書にあげられているが、上の３つ目にある例文を見ると、本質的でありさえすれば望ましくないものにも使えるようである。
