pigeon-hole 「整理棚」

１年前に読んだ "The Professor and the Madman" と同じ著者による "The Meaning of Everything" については取り上げたことがなかったが、あらためて手に取ってみた。面白いと思った単語・表現があるページは端を折って (dog-ear) おいたのだが、そうした単語のひとつ pigeon-hole について書いてみたい。

「鳩が出入りする巣の穴」「鳩小屋の仕切られた巣箱」などと辞書に出ているが、この他に、小さい仕切りにわけられた整理棚のことでもある。

上記の本では、辞書の編纂者が、収集した単語カードを分類するために使ったものとして何回か出てきた。

- ...with tens of thousands of quotation slips jammed into the wooden pigeon-holes that covered every vertical surface of the building

- ...surrounded by row upon row of slip-filled pigeon-holes

私も、英単語のカードのためではないが、こうした整理棚を使っていたことがあり、読んでいてすぐに頭に思い浮かべることができた。実物としては、例えば次のサイトに写真が載っている。

辞書を見ると、このほか「荒っぽい分類、決めつけ」という意味が載っている。

- a specific, often oversimplified category

- put ,,, in(to) a pigeonhole
（人・物）を大ざっぱに分類する、あまりにも早く単純に決めつける
USUALLY DISAPPROVING to form a very fixed, often wrong, opinion about what type of person or thing someone or something is

- People identified me with a homely farmer's wife and I could never escape that pigeonhole.

また動詞として、「～を（一方的に）分類する」、さらに「～を棚上げする」「後回しにする」という、shelve と同じ意味があることを知ったのも新たな発見だった。こうした意味の定義や例文を辞書から抜き書きしてみよう。

- a tendency to pigeonhole him as a photographer and neglect his work in sculpture and painting

- 1 USUALLY DISAPPROVING to have an often unfair idea of what type someone or something is:
He is a film producer who can't be conveniently pigeonholed.
2 to put away or leave until a later time:
Consultants found the experience frustrating - their reports were only partly implemented, or, worse still, just pigeonholed.

- to decide to deal with st later of to forget it (syn) shelve
Plans for a new school have been pigeonholed.

ついでに連想したことだが、table という動詞はアメリカ英語では shelve と同じように「棚上げする、持ち越す」を示すが、イギリス英語では「上程する、審議にかける」と、正反対の意味になるので注意が必要だ。
