brouhaha

少し前に取り上げた funny ha-ha の音からの連想で、意味上の関係はまったくないが、brouhaha という単語について短く書いてみたい。

「大騒ぎ」「喧騒」「騒音」といったような訳が辞書には載っているが、英英辞典の定義を見れば、より詳しいニュアンスがつかめると思う。なお強勢は -ou-、あるいは最初の -a- のところに置かれる。

面白い響きの単語だが、フランス語に由来するという。Online Etymology Dictionary の説明である。

1890, from Fr. brouhaha (1552), said to have been, in medieval theater, "the cry of the devil disguised as clergy." Perhaps from Heb. barukh habba' "blessed be the one who comes," used on public occasions.

ヘブライ語が関係あるとして、なぜ「騒ぎ」という意味になるのはよくわからないが、語源の点では記述に乏しい「ジーニアス英和大辞典」（電子辞書版）が、この単語については brukh habba について記載したうえで「ユダヤ会堂で繰り返し唱えられたため」と書いている。

ところで、オンラインの英英辞典でこの単語の説明を見ていると、同義語として、正統的（？）な commotion のほか、hullabaloo, hubbub, kerfuffle, ruckus といった語があげられている。どれも見慣れないが、響きが面白いと感じられる点で共通している。日本語でも「ごたごた」「がやがや」と表現するので、異なる言語でも、特徴ある音をあてる点で似通った発想をするのだろうか。
