labor of love 「好きでする仕事」「奉仕活動」

映画「おくりびと」のアカデミー賞受賞を伝える英文記事について前回書いたが、そのひとつに labor of love という表現が出てきたので、ちょっと触れておきたい。「報酬のためではなく、好きこのんでする仕事」といった意味である。

ロイター通信の記事に次のように出てくるものだが、企画に惚れ込んだキャストやスタッフが、興行的な成功といった見返りを求めることなく製作に打ち込んだ、ということか。この作品は、主演した本木雅弘自身の読書やインド旅行がきっかけで着想されて以来、十数年かけて結実したものだという。

Unlike their counterparts in many countries, Japan's "noukanshi" morticians perform cleansing and beautifying services in the presence of the bereaved family, in a ritual that combines an atmosphere of sympathy and reverence with a magician's sleight of hand.

The initial idea for the film came from Motoki and took 10 years to reach fruition, becoming a labor of love for cast and staff who did not expect a box office hit （後略）

私が初めてこの表現を目にしたのがどんな内容の英文だったか具体的には忘れてしまったが、実力不足もあり、前後関係からあたりをつけることができなかった。labor は骨の折れる仕事というイメージがあるが、「愛は苦しみを伴うもの」ということか、と宗教的、哲学的な考えも浮かんだが、その文脈にはそぐわなかったように記憶している。

結局、降参して辞書で調べた。「英文を読むときには辞書を引くな」と力説する人もいるが、何かしら印象的なところがある単語や表現は記憶に残りやすいものだ。

それはともかく、ネットで次のような定義が見つかる。２つ目のものは love をうまく生かして説明している。

- Work done for one's satisfaction rather than monetary reward. For example, The research took three years but it was a labor of love.
This expression appears twice in the New Testament (Hebrews 6:10, Thessalonians 1:3), referring to those who do God's work as a labor of love. [c. 1600]

私が初めてこの表現を見たときに宗教的な想像をしたのはあながちハズレではなかったようで、ここにあるように、新約聖書の「テサロニケ人への第一の手紙」と「へブル人への手紙」に由来することがわかった。私が持っている文語訳聖書と、オンラインの欽定訳 The King James Version で該当箇所を調べてみた。

(1 Thessalonians 1:2-3)
2 We give thanks to God always for you all, making mention of you in our prayers; 3 Remembering without ceasing your work of faith, and labour of love, and patience of hope in our Lord Jesus Christ, in the sight of God and our Father; 4 （略）

二 われら祈（いのり）のときに汝らを憶えて、常に汝ら衆人（もろもろ）のために神に感謝す。三 これ汝らが信仰のはたらき、愛の労苦、主イエス・キリストの対する望（のぞみ）の忍耐を、我らの父なる神の前に絶えず念（おも）ふに因りてなり。

(Hebrews 6:9-10)
9 But, beloved, we are persuaded better things of you, and things that accompany salvation, though we thus speak. 10 For God is not unrighteous to forget your work and labour of love, which ye have shewed toward his name, in that ye have ministered to the saints, and do minister.

なお、聖書に由来する表現を英語の原文で確かめる場合は、やはり欽定訳を見るのがいいと思う。慣用表現として定着していても、現代英語の訳ではその形で訳されていないことがあるからだ。例えばこの２か所を聖書のサイトの New International Version で見ると、labo(u)r of love という言い回しにはなっていない。日本語でも、文語訳の方がよく知られている聖書の言葉があると思うが、似たようなものだろう。
