tergiversate (Word of the Year 2011)

年末年始には、いくつかの団体が Word of the Year を選んで発表する。そのひとつ Dictionary.com は、今回 tergiversate という見慣れない単語を選んだ。

辞書には、「変節する、転向する、脱党する、信仰を捨てる」、また「言い逃れをする、ごまかす」といった訳が出ている。Dictionary.com のサイトは

- to change repeatedly one’s attitude or opinions with respect to a cause, subject, etc.; equivocate

と説明している。

Dictionary.com 自身、これが実際によく使われた単語というわけではないと認めている。今回は、いわば「流行語」ではなく、過去１年がどんな年だったかをよく表す言葉を選ぶことにしたということで、その結果が tergiversate だったということだ。Dictionary.com は2011年が

- The stock market, politicians and even public opinion polls have tergiversated all year long.

だったとしている。

一方、大手辞書出版社の Merriam-Webster が「2011年の言葉」のトップに選んだのは pragmatic だった。こちらは Dictionary.com とは対照的に基礎レベルの単語である。公式サイトには、

- Pragmatic is not associated with any one event but instead describes "an admirable quality that people value in themselves and wish for in others, especially in their leaders and their policies," said Peter Sokolowski, Editor at Large at Merriam-Webster. "It's a word that resonates with society as a whole; something people want to understand fully."

とあった。Dictionary.com 同様、特定の出来事と関連して選んだのではないというわけだ。

２つの団体の発表を見ると、去年は決定的な「流行語」がなく、どちらも選定に苦労したのではないかという勝手な想像をしている。

各団体の Word of the Year は、例年アメリカで起きた政治・経済・社会の出来事で話題となった言葉が選ばれることが多く、外国人が楽しむにはハードルが高いと毎年感じている。今回はそれとは違った意味でとらえどころのない Word of the Year だった。

近く American Dialect Society という団体による Word of the Year 2011 の発表があるが、どんな結果になるだろうか。
