「未婚」とは限らない unmarried

前回 confirmed bachelor という表現を取り上げた際に引用した辞書の説明に unmarried が使われていた。この単語の意味は「まだ結婚していない」とは限らないので、短く書いておきたい。

辞書を引くと、「かつて結婚していたが離婚して今はひとり者の」、あるいは「結婚していたが死別した」という場合にも使うことができることがわかる。

つまり、未婚か既婚かというより、現在結婚している状態にあるかどうかという視点から un- を考えなければいけないようだ。

英語圏の辞書も、単に not married とだけ定義しているものがある一方で、

- a : not now or previously married
b : being divorced or widowed
an unmarried couple who are living together
a girl who swore she'd remain unmarried for her whole life
(Merriam-Webster's Online Dictionary)

と、より詳しく説明している辞書もあった。

そうするとunmarried mother は「未婚の母」だけでなく、離婚あるいは死別した母親にも使える理屈になりそうだが、Wikipedia の "Single parent" という項にある次の記述を見ると、実際はあまりそうは使わないのかとも思える。

Although the public is sympathetic with low-wage single mothers, government benefits are fairly low.
