washed-up 「落ちぶれた」 （映画「バードマン」がアカデミー賞受賞） [映画・ドラマと英語]
今年のアカデミー賞で「バードマン」が作品賞などを受賞した。主人公を演じたマイケル・キートンは惜しくも主演男優賞を逃したが、出演作の「バットマン」や「ガン・ホー」を以前このブログで取り上げたこともあり、気になる俳優の一人である。
ティム・バートン版「バットマン」は、ダークさとゴシックな雰囲気、それにコミカルな要素が共存し、キートンは心を病んだ「らしくない」スーパーヒーローである Batman とその正体の富豪 Bruce Wayne の複雑な性格をうまく表現していた。個人的にはクリスチャン・ベールが演じたクリストファー・ノーラン版「ダークナイト」のバットマンよりも好みなのは、以前も書いた通りだ。
この他「ビートルジュース」 Beetlejuice での怪演が知られているが、最近は（少なくとも日本では）あまり名前を聞くことがないと感じていた。今回の「バードマン」は、まだ日本では公開されていないので前評判に触れた限りではあるが、うれしい"カムバック"である。
何せ、かつてスーパーヒーロー「バードマン」を演じて大人気となったが今は落ち目でカムバックをめざしている俳優の役を、あの「"バットマン"のマイケル・キートン」がつとめるとあっては、それだけで注目を浴びるのは必至だ。
彼自身がどのように考えて役を受けたにせよ、いろいろな見方をされることは避けられないだろうからプレッシャーもあったはずだと思うが、見事、アカデミー賞にノミネートされる演技を見せたということになる。
久しぶりに目にしたキートンは、60歳を越して頭髪は後退し、セレブのブルース・ウェインを演じた二十数年前の面影もなく、時のうつろいを感じさせる（もちろん私も同じ分トシを取ったことになる）。
「バードマン」に関する英文記事もいくつか読んだが、その中で目についた washed-up という言葉を取り上げよう。ハイフンを入れない表記もある。

賞を逃したこの時のキートンの胸中はいかばかりか、ちょっと悲しいエピソードだ。記事のタイトルは Maybe next time, Michael! である。そう、次があるさ、がんばってほしい。
ついでだがこの文にある surreptitiously は in a secret way, so that others will not notice ということ。また critically-acclaimed は「高評価の」「評論家の称賛を受けた」「絶賛された」で、日本語の「批判」は悪い文脈で使うことが少なくなく、critical も「あら探し」として使うことがあるが、ふつうの「評論」を意味する場合もある。
