steal a glance 「盗み見をする」 （カズオ・イシグロ「日の名残り」）

英語の表現やイディオムは、直訳すると日本語とまったく違う意味になる場合もあれば、似た発想をするのか同じような意味になる言葉もあっておもしろい。カズオ・イシグロの小説「日の名残り」にあった steal a glance など、後者に属する例といえるかもしれない。

旅行中の主人公が、酒場で一服している場面である。

steam は「盗む」、glance は「ちらっと見ること」ということで、ほぼ文字通りの「盗み見する」という意味になる。

英語圏の辞書の説明も見てみよう。例文を見ていると、けっこう日常生活で使えそうな表現だと感じる。
