quote-unquote 「いわば、いってみれば」

前回、「いわゆる」を表すジェスチャーとして air quotes、また scare quotes という用法について書いたが、口頭で似たような意味を持つのが quote unquote である。辞書によっては２語の間にカンマやハイフンを入れる表記を載せている。

「引用（始まり）」「引用終わり」という単語を並べただけだが、これをひとまとまりにして何かの言葉の前に言うことで、書き言葉ならばクォーテーションマークがつく引用語であることを伝える。例えば下記の用例にある quote, unquote, it's time we had a little talk の部分は、"it's time we had a little talk" ということになる。

そして前回の air quotes, scare quotes と同じように、この言い方も皮肉や疑念を表すことがある。

- (idiomatic) Emphasizes the following, or sometimes preceding, word or phrase for irony, as used almost exclusively in spoken language.
Maybe you should ask your quote unquote friend what happened to the money.

- If you use a word which someone else has used and you say quote, unquote, you are drawing attention to the word, and showing that you do not think it is an accurate or precise way to describe the situation you are reffering to.
You can also say quote, end quote.

余談だが、私がこの言い方を知ったのは大学生の時、故・國弘正雄先生が外国人へのインタビューの中で使っていたのを聞いてだった。対談の内容は忘れてしまったが、硬骨漢だった國弘先生が疑念を込めて使っているということにすぐに気づいたのは今でも覚えている。
