sock in 「悪天候で飛行場が使えなくなる」 [単語・表現]
先日紹介した fog in を拾ったTVドラマ「刑事コロンボ」のエピソード「幻の娼婦」には、sock in (be socked in) という表現も出てきた。snow in、rain in とあわせて“お仲間”といえるので、取り上げておこう。
濃霧のため飛行機の出発が遅れている空港の待合室で、休んでいた登場人物の女性が空港スタッフに起こされる、という場面である。
- 女性：Oh, we're finally boarding.
係員：I'm afraind not. The airport's still socked in.

先日の fog in と同じ状況に使えるが、この sock in は視界をさえぎるのが霧でなくてもいいようだ。
- （通例受身）（霧・雨などが）（滑走路を）覆い隠す；（空港・飛行機・人を）（悪天候のために）飛行不能にする

また、名詞の sock に windsock 「（気象・航空の）風見用円錐筒、吹き流し」という意味があり、飛行取り消しの際の信号に用いられたことから、といった由来の説明もいくつかの辞書に載っていた。
また、どの辞書にも初出が1944年と書かれている。ということは、はっきりと事例がわかっているのだろう。第２次世界大戦と関係があるのだろうか。
インターネットをちょっと見た限りでは、この年の事例は探し出せなかったが、翌1945年に書かれたものは見つかったので引用しよう。イタリア戦線で活動していたアメリカ軍の爆撃機搭乗員の日誌である。
- Special target. Railroad station in North Eastern Po Valley. Valley was socked in & target covered.
- Field was socked in when we returned but we found a hole & came down through.
（この hole は「雲の切れ間」といった意味だろう）
- When we returned to field it was socked in so we let down through overcast. As we did the right engine cut out but caught right back.

なお、sock には「強打する」という意味の動詞もある。名詞の sock には「靴下」の他に「軽い靴、室内用の靴」という意味があるので、これで思い切りひっぱたくことから来ているのかと思ったが、実は別の言葉で、綴りが変化して今では同じになったというものらしい。
最後に、英語圏の辞典から sock in の説明と例文を見てみよう。由来として windsock 説を挙げていることは共通するが、単純に「風向を計る」ことと結びつけているのがちょっと異なっている。
