serendipity, chance encounter 「偶然の出会い」「セレンディピティ」 [読書と英語]
10日ほど前に contest-curation website （まとめ記事サイト）という言葉を紹介した際、「ネットは便利だが、新聞雑誌や本屋に比べて”思わぬ発見”の機会が少ないように感じる」「そういう発見も serendipity といえるだろうか」と書いた。この週末たまたま見つけて読んだ The Unknown Unknown という本が、まさにこれに関連するような内容だったので、思わぬ偶然に驚いた。
ごく短い本で（私が購入したのは kindle 版だがペーパーバック版では32ページ）、英語も比較的平易とあって、私程度の力でも一日で読むことができる。
本の主旨は「インターネットで検索に使うのは自分が知っている言葉であり、そこから得られる情報も未知のようでいて実はその枠内にある。自分が知らないということすらわからない事物にはネットでは出会えない。書店こそ、そういう偶然の出会いが得られる場に他ならない」というものだ。従来型の本屋の礼賛だが、私は kindle 版をネットからダウンロードしてタブレットで読んだので著者の意に沿わない形となった。
それはともかく、この中に、serendipity が出て来るくだりがあったので、ちょっと長いが引用しよう。ある珍本を著者が見つけた経緯を説明している。
- You will never own a copy because, as it says on the back, it is NOT FOR GENERAL SALE. The only reason I have a copy is that, like most of the nobler things in life, somebody had simply abandoned it in the changing area at the swimming ponds on Hampstead Heath, where I found it on one April afternoon.
And if I hadn't found it lying there on a bench, I would never have known that I hadn't found it.
Such serendipities are rare.

この単語を私が知ったのは、2001年に公開された同名のアメリカ映画によってだった。日本では原題をそのままカタカナにした「セレンディピティ」というタイトルになっていた。
その昔、外国映画は工夫をこらした邦題がつけられていたが、徐々に原題そのままのカタカタが主流になっていった。それとともに、わけのわからないタイトルも増えたようだ。
離婚訴訟が関係していることがうかがえる Kramer vs. Kramer という原題の超名作が意味不明の叫びにも聞こえてしまう「クレイマー、クレイマー」となり（無理なイチャモンをつける「クレーマー」は当時まだ一般的ではなかった）、法律事務所が農場に化けたかのような「ザ・ファーム」 The Firm、また原題とは似ていないが、「裏切りのサーカス」では曲芸の興行を連想せざるを得ないスパイ映画 Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy （参考→ Hoover 「電気掃除機」）も無理なカタカナ語をタイトルに使った例だ。
映画 Serendipity の邦題も、最初目にした時は「意味不明で不親切だな」と思ったが、英語を調べてみると、ぴったりと対応する一語の日本語がない単語とわかり、その独特の響きとあいまって、かえって印象づけられた。
そしてこの映画の影響だろうか、今では日本語としてそのまま使われた例も目につくようになっている。「ウィキペディア」にも項目があり、下記のように説明されている。
- セレンディピティ（serendipity）とは、素敵な偶然に出会ったり、予想外のものを発見すること。また、何かを探しているときに、探しているものとは別の価値があるものを偶然見つけること。平たく言うと、ふとした偶然をきっかけに、幸運をつかみ取ることである。
しかし日本語として定着したとまで言えるか個人的には疑問で、わからない人にはさっぱりわからない言葉だろうと思う。カタカナ語の濫用は困ったものだが、しかし一方で英単語をひとつ覚えることができた”素敵な偶然”だったので、私にとって受けとめが難しい言葉だ。
脱線が長くなったが、Oxford 辞典のサイトにあるこの単語の説明を引用しよう。

もうひとつ、Wiktionary の説明はもっと長いが、ていねいで内容もおもしろい。由来の説明も Oxford より詳しく、ペルシャのおとぎ話に基づいた単語であることや、元になった Serendip という言葉はスリランカ（旧セイロン）のことだと書かれている。

Serendipity is when you find things you weren't looking for because finding what you are looking for is so damn difficult.

このように18世紀にできた言葉だが、よく使われるようになったのは20世紀になってからで、科学の分野でも使われるという。
