woulda, coulda, shoulda 「今さらウダウダ、グダグダ言っても…」

前回は to が発音の影響で a になってしまうことについて英語の歌を例にして書いたが、連想で woulda, coulda, shoulda という表現を取り上げたい。３つの助動詞のあとの -a は have が変化したもので、would have などのいわば短縮形だ。

目にした範囲では、見出し語として掲げているのはオンライン辞書しかなかった。「ああすべきだったのに」「こうだったらよかったのに」などと、今さらグチグチ言っても始まらない、どうにもならないことを振り返った際に言う言葉で、下記の記述によると、そう嘆いている他人に対して使うことが多いそうだ。

もちろん「助動詞＋have＋動詞の過去分詞」に由来するのだろう。また３つの語は順番を入れ替えることができるので、６通りの言い方があることになる。

- having an opportunity and not taking it, thus regretting it later; usually used when someone is saying to the person who missed the opportunity.

President Clinton . . . had his clear shot at health-care reform, if we need it, he and his wife, but they blew it. As Mrs. Clinton might say, woulda coulda shoulda.

上記 Wiktionary はさらに、「ニューヨーク・タイムズ」紙で長期連載されていた On Language （言葉についての名コラム）で William Safire 氏が書いた内容にも言及している。1994年の記事で、少なくともその頃にはこの表現が使われていたことになる。全文がオンラインで読めるので書き留めておこう。

さらにネットで見つけた実例は、10年近く前の「ニューヨーカー」誌にあったものだ。これまたヒラリー・クリントンについての内容で、彼女はこの表現と親和性が高いと見える。もっと詳しく調べたらおもしろいだろう。

- Three media heavies, middle-aged men to a man, discussed the speech.

“It depends on what you compare it to,” said Heavy No. 1. “It was pretty damn generous compared to Teddy in 1980.”

“Yeah,” said No. 2. “Teddy, like, turned his back on Carter. Might’ve cost him the election.”

“It would’ve been nice if she’d made some argument for Obama besides that he’s the nominee of the Democratic Party,” said No. 3.

“Yeah, like something specific about him. Half her speech was about herself.”

“Woulda, shoulda, coulda. Give her a break. Maybe the speech wasn’t as good as it shoulda been, but it was a hell of a lot better than it coulda been. She did what she had to do. Maybe more.”

ここにある It wasn’t as good as it should've been, but it was a lot better than it could've been. なんて、言えそうででなかなか出てこない言い方だ。

もうひとつ、Woulda, Shoulda, Coulda: Overcoming Regrets, Mistakes and Missed Opportunities なんていうタイトルの本もあることがわかった。

2017年も間もなく終わるが、この一年を振り返って「あの時こうしておいたらよかった」「ああなっていたらよかったのに」と後悔や言い訳、愚痴を垂れている人がいたら、使ってみたくなるのが今回の表現だ。「後悔先に立たず」というが、結局のところ、なかなか思い通りに展開しないのが人生である。
