hole in the wall 「場末のパッとしない店」 [単語・表現]
このところ wall を使った表現について書いている流れでもうひとつ。hole in the wall は、「へんぴな所にある狭苦しい家・薄汚い店」を指す言葉である。
何かの英文を読んでいて出てきたので覚えたのではない。きっかけとなったのは、この英語を直訳したような名前のスパゲッティのチェーン店である。
ある時ふと、「おもしろい店名だが何か意味があるだろうか、もしかしたら英語の表現だろうか」と疑問を持ち、調べてみて探り当てた。
英語圏の辞書から説明や例文を引用しよう。
- A small, modest, or obscure place, as in My new apartment is just a hole in the wall, or Believe it or not, that little hole in the wall is a great restaurant.
(American Heritage Dictionary of Idioms)
- a small or confining place, especially one that is dingy, shabby, or out-of-the-way:
Their first shop was a real hole in the wall.
(Dictionary.com)
- A small, inconspicuous place, often an establishment such a restaurant.
The term sometimes but not always has a negative connotation implying a place that is perceived to be disreputable in someway.
I wasn't impressed when Gary suggested a hole in the wall for our first date, but we ended up having a good time.
(Farlex Dictionary of Idioms)
